Dear MAC,

Earlier this year there was information that Amtrak might not be providing passenger service in Indiana starting in October. They and Indiana could not get together on a deal. There are several of us that frequently take the train to Chicago. We would have to go to Champaign Ill. to get the train. Can you give us more information about that?

Ruth

Dear Ruth,

You are correct. Leaders in Indiana have until October to decide whether they want to spend state money to fund Amtrak passenger trains.

According to our news gathering partner WISH-TV, Congress will no longer fund routes shorter than 750 miles. They also report that the service in Indiana carried nearly 37,000 passengers in the 2012 fiscal year, but got $4 million in subsidies. We'll give you a heads up if the state makes a decision. Thanks for the question!
