Bill and Retta Richardson! My choice of subjects for this week's column are both retired teachers and chances are if you have attended either Willson, Beard or Nicholson grade schools or had children go there, then you have enjoyed knowing this pair.

Between Bill and Retta they tally a wow 70 years in the field of education. Longevity isn't just important in teaching to the Richardsons, but also in their marriage.

Forty-two years of wedded bliss and living in the same home for 34 years makes the Richardson's a family to rever. Bill grew-up in Westport, while Retta was born and raised in Aurora, Colo. Many of her family members still live there. In fact, one of Retta and Bill's favorite places to vacation is the family's cabin in the Colorado mountains.

Now, you might wonder how a boy from Indiana and a gal from Colorado could possibly hook up? I sure did!

A teaching friend of Retta's lived in an apartment next door to Bill when he was stationed at the Lowry Air Force base after returning from Vietnam. She thought that "Bill and Retta would make a great couple!"

Yep, it turned out to be a perfect prediction. Once they were introduced, it didn't take long for true love to blossom.

After their wedding, Bill and Retta moved back to Indiana where Retta found a job teaching at Greensburg, then St. Paul, while Bill worked in the advertising department of the local newspaper. When Bill decided to go to Purdue, there were no apartments in Lafayette, so Bill and Retta moved to Crawfordsville. Here they have stayed.

Retta has worked at Willson, Beard and Hoover. Upon graduation, Bill first taught at Waveland for one year and spent the rest of his years at Nicholson teaching, third, fourth and sixth grades. Retta taught Kindergarten, second, third and fourth.

Both retired in 2005.

Bill's big hobby is playing golf. Multi-talented Retta enjoys crafts, knitting, reading and volunteering at the Wesley Thrift Shop. She also enjoys being a teacher's friend. They both deliver Meals on Weels and absolutely love to square dance.

Traveling, especially going on cruises is something they truly take pleasure in. They have been active members of St. Bernard's Catholic Church since arriving in C'ville.

The two younger Richardsons are daughter, Kristie, and son, Michael. Mike was in basketball, golf, and NHS. Kristie served on the flag core, was in the Sunshine Society and active with Steven's Dance Academy. Both are graduates of Crawfordsville High School. Kristie is married and lives in Terre Haute working as a CPA. Michael lives in Ft. Worth, Texas and is a physical therapist.

The Richardson's most exciting part of their life at present is their adorable new grandson, Evan, son of Kristie and her husband, Richard Bernier.

Although not native Montgomery Countians, the Richardsons love Crawfordsville, their adopted hometown and help in many ways around the community. They are both to be admired and I am happy to present them as this week's feature in "Around the County!"
