THE CHALLENGE ’17 is under way and I’m pleased to report this is the largest group we have had in the event’s three-year history. And what a group it is! We have young to not-so-young, and some who appear to be in pretty decent shape to . . . well, let’s just say I know how they feel. As I often tell folks, been there, outgrew the T-shirt.
Starting soon in your favorite Montgomery County daily, we’ll publish standings with how this group is doing in terms of both weight loss and money raised. If you wish to toss in some financial support I’m sure the participants would appreciate it. But if you would be kind enough to lend some emotional support, a few words of encouragement would really help a lot!
(Funny, life often works the very same way . . . don’t you think!)

SPEAKING OF buzz, the mayor’s recent announcement over the city leaving IWA created a huge one. Some folks say that this isn’t anything new, citing former C’ville Mayor John Zumer’s similar move a few years ago.
I don’t know. This one feels much different. Last time, most everyone involved correctly assumed that Zumer was a one-term mayor and that patience was the best answer. Not the same this time. Barton is already in his second term and was swept back into office on a landslide. The guess here is that bigger announcements are coming. We’ll watch, wait and see.

WHILE WE ARE on politics, did you know that Mike Pence will become the sixth Hoosier sworn in as our vice president? That makes Indiana only second to New York in terms of states with the most veeps. New York has 11, but then again it had a fairly lengthy head start.

AS AN OLD sports writer, let me end this week with an observation. State-wide media have lambasted Colts owner Jim Irsay for going after big names for coach and even Peyton Manning for a front office job. The “experts” say it was unfair to current coach Chuck Pagano and GM Ryan Grigson. Apparently there’s no pleasing some people. A lot of these same media experts were just ripping Irsay for not firing Pagano and Grigson. Guess it goes to prove – damned if you do, damned if you don’t.
