Well it is a new year and I truly hope that you all have a safe and prosperous new year. I thought that I would do a little review of the 11 months that I have been here.
We have helped file 149 claims and saw 369 people in our office to discuss benefits and attended 23 veterans meetings. I have also made 46 in home or nursing home visits and received over 485 phone calls. We also helped with the Veterans Expo at the American Legion post 72 which brought a lot of organizations together for the good of the veterans. Our Montgomery County veterans that have filed claims that were approved received a total of $379,988 for pensions, claims and death benefits for the first 11 months of this year. So if you are in need of help with the VA system don't hesitate to contact me so that I may help you get through the clutter of the system. I am not only talking about the WW2 and Korean War veterans but all veterans. I want to also thank Vickie Emmert who works part time for me and is a great asset.
We also made three Honor Flights in 2013 with a total of 17 veterans from Montgomery county area and a total of 80 veterans per flight. We take WW2 and Korean War veterans to Washington DC to see their memorials. It cost them nothing go and if they don't have a family member or friend that wants to go with them we will provide a guardian for them. The guardian pays $400 to go with them and they don't need to be a veteran. On a personal note our two son's Mike and Mark Ellis both traveled on the June flight and said they enjoyed the experience and by the way they paid their own way as they accompanied two Korean War Vets. We are planning our next flights for 2014 which will be May 5, Sept. 29 and Oct. 27 come and join us.
By the way we have started to accept application for Vietnam Veterans to go to Washington DC to see the "Wall". It may be 2015 before you go but get your name in now.
I do want to thank those that have helped us raise funds for Honor Flight in 2013 as they are Tri County Bank & Trust, Hoosier Heartland State Bank, Nucor, American Legion Post 72, Jamestown American Legion Post 395, Tipmont REMC, Pace Dairy, Dari Licious and Lester B. Sommer Elementary School. If I forgot someone I apologize.
If you want to donate to Honor Flight send your check to Greater Lafayette Honor Flight, PO Box 275, Lafayette, IN 47902. Your donation is tax deductible. It does cost us $500 to send a veteran on this trip.
