It’s dead week. Which means athletes take a grand total of seven days off, which can be a long time in the sporting world.

Let’s talk about the summer baseball teams this week. Specifically, the Indiana Thunder 15u, 16u and 17u teams who each won their respective tournaments this past weekend.

With the sunny weather, camps and weight training firing up, summer seems to be suddenly in full swing.

    Hello sporting fans!

I know it has been a while. My “Weekly” Smorga-Sport hasn’t been very weekly lately, mostly due to my topic this week: spring sports.

I was on a hockey kick for a while. I had never attended a hockey game until one of my friends (a die-hard Chicago Blackhawks fan) took me to an Indy Fuel game this winter.

  • That shot!
    Tuesday, April 05, 2016 11:01 PM

It’s been on all the news and radio stations . . . and rightfully so.

Even though there were technically two, only one shining moment will go down in history. USA Today Sports had one of their headlines as, “Marcus Paige hit the greatest shot no one will remember.”

Unfortunately, my Bulldogs fell to Virginia. Yes, it was a longshot for them to make it past UVA but one can only hope.

The boys’ basketball Sectional hype has arrived. And is here to stay.

The Class 2A Sectional 44 and Class 3A Sectional 25 brackets have shaken out with a few different likely outcomes, but two more definite stats-based outcomes in my opinion.

We have had an exciting few weeks.

From seven girls’ swimmers/divers making it past Sectionals to 27 wrestlers going to Regionals, 13 of those to Semi-State and three of them to State. In boys’ swimming action, six athletes also advanced out of Sectionals.

With much ado about the Wrestling State finals and the boys’ basketball conference standings, I would like to focus on a lesser known sport which is going strong this week and heads to their County meet next Monday.

As a sports editor, I feel as if it is my duty to weigh in on the Cam Newton show which took place Sunday. Unfortunately, my Panthers lost the game but something else was lost on that day as well. Many people’s respect for the MVP coming into the game diminished greatly throughout the night.

It wasn’t just the post-game interview but all the factors combined that did it for me. The first sign for me was him not going all out for the fumble. Instead, he steps aside. When has stepping aside gotten football players anywhere? He needs to fight like hell to keep the possession.

    The mats are awaiting.

Despite having a week full of girls and boys basketball, I lead our focus to a Saturday even fuller with wrestling at North Montgomery.
