Claude Johnson and Suanne Milligan have been named fire commissioners for the city of Crawfordsville.
This is a new board for the city. Johnson and Milligan were named by Mayor Todd Barton. The city council and the fire department have also made appointments.
Johnson said he had served as a police commissioner and was a firefighter in Delphi in the 1960s.
"I've never done this before," he said. "But I have a deep seated love for the fire department."
Johnson, a long-time Rotarian, has found and delivered about 20 fire trucks to cities in Mexico on behalf of the district Rotary clubs.
The mayor's appointments. have to be politically diverse by city code. Johnson is a Democrat and Milligan is a Republican. Carol Cook was appointed by the city council. The city fire department has appointed David Hunt and Rick Warner.
"This is a pretty diverse group," Barton said.
The fire commissioners will have much the same responsibilities as the police commissioners. The fire commissioners will address hirings and promotions, the mayor said.
"It's important because it gives firefighters that merit protection they did not have before," Barton said."It takes it out of the political realm."
