There is a secret world in plain view here, hidden between the close buildings and narrow alleys of our downtown Crawfordsville streets. There are beveled glass doors which lead through darkened hallways, up steep stairways and into warren-like rooms filled with treasure. Within these rooms are the hats of flying monkeys, the sequins of flapper girls, steps that lead to tall beds of hopeful princesses, and wonders to fill the worlds where all these visions come to life.

Within this secret world there is a magical floor. This floor has had dreams built upon it; the walls surrounding it have had fantasies scrawled upon them. The lights that shine down on it have lit up a thousand stories and hundreds of children's faces. Beyond the magical floor there are rows and rows of seats, layered in the dim room, waiting to transport their occupants into the realms of possibility and impossibility.

Although this world seems to be made of metal lights and velvet curtains, it is not. It is made of glassy-eyed dreamers, our children, our parents, our neighbors and strangers we will soon know. We fill the seats and set the stage; we set foot in and never step out again. These people are our own. The Vanity is New York, Austria, Bedford Falls and Chicago. It is North, South and Crawfordsville. It is us.

Each year a series of new, fascinating worlds emerges from these brick walls. Those who choose to embark on the new season's adventures will be captivated by a fiddler on the roof, a little mermaid, a wise spider, a desperate man with a wonderful life, a dark comedy of murder, campers who will rock it out, a girl who lies in a coma, and a failed attempt at producing a Broadway flop-all brought to life within the walls of the Vanity Theater.

The Vanity Theater is hidden between an antique shop and a pizza joint, between reality and imagination, between speculation and improbability. Within the world of the Vanity, we sow passion, dedication, imagination and laughter and strive to return entertainment, satisfaction and a touch of wonder. Experience the world at 122 S. Washington in downtown Crawfordsville. The Vanity Theater's Sugar Creek Players welcome you, as captive audience and future members. Come join us as we create and experience the magic of theater, a secret world for all to share.
