One possession is what the game between Crawfordsville and Greencastle came down to Friday night.

Unfortunately for the Athenians, it was the Tiger Cubs who made that one play to escape with a 27-20 season-opening win.

  • Hot Dogs dampen Athenian Homecoming
    Saturday, September 12, 2015 12:23 AM

The Frankfort Hot Dogs scored on five of their seven first half possessions, and tacked on a defensive touchdown, as they raced to a 28-7 first quarter lead and never looked back, beating Crawfordsville on Homecoming 58-23.

Frankfort’s Dyllan Shelley took the opening kickoff from his own 12 yard line, and raced 71 yards down to the Athenian 17 to give the Hot Dogs great field position. Quarterback Jarrod Smith would scamper in on the next play for the 8-0 lead.

He and Shelley also played roles on the next two Frankfort scores from the defensive side of the ball. Smith’s interception set up a 10 play 63-yard drive that he capped off with a 1-yard run. Shelley would return his interception 48-yards for the score and a 22-0 Frankfort lead 7:06 in.

“They showed up to play, and we didn’t,” said Athenian head coach Mike Hammons. “I think it’s as easy as that. We’re struggling at the beginning of games to be ready to play.”

  • Athenians host Hot Dogs for Homecoming
    Thursday, September 10, 2015 11:17 AM

Crawfordsville enters their game Friday against Sagamore Conference foe Frankfort looking at a different opponent, but a team with a familiar offensive mindset. The Hot Dogs, much like West Vigo and Western Boone, are teams that like to establish the run game early, which opens up their passing game.

“We’ll need to be ready to stop the run again this week,” said Athenian head coach Mike Hammons. “They’ve thrown the ball a little more this year, but they’re a run first team.”

Frankfort’s senior quarterback, Jarrod Smith, and senior tailback, Patrick Brandenburg, account for over 90 percent of the Hot Dogs total offense. Smith has 591 yards through the air and 275 yards on the ground, while Brandenburg has 266 yards rushing, and 288 yards receiving.

  • Stars pull away from Athenians
    Monday, September 07, 2015 9:19 PM

DOVER – Crawfordsville and Western Boone had to sit through a three hour weather delay Friday, which caused their game to be moved to 10 a.m. Saturday morning.

After Western Boone jumped out to a 28-14 halftime lead, the two teams had to endure another delay as storms moved through the area. However, after the clouds cleared, the Stars pulled away from Crawfordsville late for a 49-20 win.

Crawfordsville and Western Boone enter Friday’s Sagamore Conference opener with identical 1-1 marks.

However, both will be looking to rebound from losses last week and move atop the standings with a win Friday night.

Crawfordsville enters the contest having lost 46-26 at West Vigo, while Western Boone lost at West Lafayette Harrison 25-20.

  • Athenians run for opening win
    Wednesday, August 19, 2015 11:21 PM

The Crawfordsville Athenians enter the 2015 campaign looking to establish an identity. That identity involves using their running game, which should help open up their passing attack. It’s something that they’ve been working on over the summer, and it showed dividends during last week’s scrimmage.

“I thought our running attack was good last week against Sheridan,” third year head coach Mike Hammons said. “That’s something that we’ve been trying to improve as a program, and I think we’re making positive strides in that direction.”

They’ll look to establish that strategy early, and often, Friday evening as the Cascade Cadets visit Athenian field.
