NEW MARKET – County athletes fared well at the Sagamore Conference Cross Country meet Saturday at Southmont. In all, the county had 16 runners (nine boys and seven girls) represented on both the first and second all-Conference team.
The top finisher on the boy’s side was Mountie Brooks Long. He finished second to help pace the Mounties to an overall fourth place finish.
Crawfordsville’s Maddie Hurt made it a 3-peat individually as she won the girls meet in a time of 20:39 helping the Athenians to their first ever Sagamore Conference championship beating Western Boone by 2-points.
“Maddie Hurt looked solid today from start to finish,” said Athenian head coach Megan Craig. “We knew it would be a close race (for the team title), and we had all five girls run well today. This is huge for our program going forward.”

Southmont has one of the most physically demanding courses in all of West Central Indiana, just ask the participants in Thursday’s Montgomery County cross country meet.

With runners crawling across the finish line and a few almost passing out, you could tell everyone gave it their all.
