LIZTON — The Lady Athenians’ soccer team closed out what can only be considered a re-builing year by bowing out to Western Boone 6-0 in the second game of Sectional 44 play, Tuesday night. For Crawfordsville head coach Laurie Vellner, the idea of rebuilding was never far from the ladies all season.
“We came into this year with our eyes open,” said Vellner. “We had no illusions. We didn’t think we were going to challenge for the conference title. What we set out to do was to get better every match. There were a couple of times we slipped back a bit, but for the most part, I think we did improve.”
Crawfordsville fell behind Western Boone within the first 30 seconds of play. The Stars’ Olivia Hole put her team on top to stay by driving home the first goal at 39:42 of the match. Western Boone would score three more times in the first, and two times in the second to advance in the tournament to meet North Montgomery on Thursday.

Crawfordsville faced another stiff challenge Monday evening in the form of the Class A no. 7, Lafayette Central Catholic (6-3).

The Knights proved their rank, scoring six first-half goals on the way to a 10-1 victory.

“Our last four games have been really tough and will only help us going forward.” Athenian head coach Laurie Vellner said of games against Terre Haute North, Lebanon, Danville and Central Catholic. “I feel that we’ve progressed as a team every single game, and we’re doing better at the things we’re working on in practice.”
