  • Mounties victories over South Putnam
    Monday, September 14, 2015 11:00 PM

NEW MARKET – The Lady Mounties have been knocking on the door looking for their first win of the season. After taking the Lady Mustangs to five sets last Thursday, and dropping two close games to Frankfort on Saturday in the Noblesville Invitational, Southmont finally got the proverbial monkey off their backs with a25-21, 25-16, 25-17 win over the South Putnam Eagles.

“Tonight’s win was amazing,” said Mountie head coach Kristin Charles. “We’ve been close, so many times lately, so it was nice to finally finish.”

The first set was back-and-forth. The Mounties forced an Eagle timeout leading 21-15. They would extend that lead to 23-16 after a Diamond Hutchinson kill, before the Eagles clawed their way back to trail just 23-20 that forced a Mountie timeout. However, Macy Wells kill gave the Mounties set one.

With an ace from Kaylee VanCleave and a kill from Brittany Barrett, the Mounties were back in the game 11-8. The battle was neck and neck as the Mounties slowly started catching up until it was tied at 19-19. Barrett tipped the ball to the middle hole to pull up 20-19.

  • Mounties, Cascade duke it out
    Thursday, September 03, 2015 11:55 PM

“Point goes to the Lady Mounties” booms across South’s gymnasium as the Mounties fight one of their hardest games of the season against the Cascade Cadets.

The Mounties took the Cadets to four games in a breath-taking series in which there were an innumerable amount of lead-changes and tie scores.

During the first set, South stayed on Cascade’s heel until double digits when Cascade started pulling away. They had a five point run after their lead of 17-14 which put the Mounties too far behind.

Heather Miller resigned as head coach of South’s volleyball team on Wednesday.

“She resigned due to health issues,” athletic director Aaron Charles said. “We completely understand and thank her for the time she was here and definitely want to make sure her health is the number one most important thing.”

Kristen Charles started as interim coach on Thursday with the Mounties against Covington. Charles coached some JV and varsity at Clinton Central. She will be joining Tim Hutson, the assistant coach, for the rest of the season.

“Hopefully we can make the transition pretty smooth and benefit the girls,” Aaron Charles said.

  • Lady Mounties overtaken by Greencastle
    Tuesday, August 25, 2015 11:26 PM

South volleyball battled it out with the Greencastle Tiger Cubs during the first set of Tuesday’s game.

After their 25-23 loss in the first, the Mounties fell 25-9 in both the second and third sets.

“We noticed from the first two games that we needed to cover on the blocks and the kills so we worked on that coverage, which I did see an improvement tonight,” coach Heather Miller said. The two teams remained within four points of each other throughout the entire first set with the Tiger Cubs in the lead for the majority of the game. After two aces by senior Kaiti Chadd, the score tied up at 17-17.

Chadd ended with nine digs while senior Brittany Barrett gathered seven.

The Mounties kept it within two points until Greencastle took it away 25-23.
