Vladik Cegarra arrived to the United States by way of Spain 72 hours before the first day of school for Crawfordsville.
As a foreign exchange student, Cegarra has encountered his share of social barriers but he has dominated those just like the sport he loves: tennis.
“I think things are a bit more individualized in Spain so being on a team is still something he’s still getting used to.” Athenians head coach Carrie Jones said. “That’s been a really cool thing to see though—it’s become a part of his sport and his game.”

    Magic number, 69.

Fourteen years after the record was set by Crawfordsville’s Chris Myers with 68 wins, Senior Dane Baldwin makes his mark in the record book of all-time wins.

He hit the mark after last night’s win over Danville’s No. 1 singles.

“It’s pretty cool to get a record like that,” Baldwin said. “It doesn’t really feel any different. I mean I just go out there and play.”

Baldwin has had a career of the century with 30 wins and two losses in middle school, a No. 1 singles spot his four varsity years, and going undefeated in conference play his sophomore, junior and thus far in his senior year.

Back and forth. Back and forth.

That was how the night went for No. 2 doubles in the county match-up between Crawfordsville and North.

The ball game was all tied up. The Athenians took two and the Chargers took two. The night rested on two pairs: seniors Trey Barton and Cameron Douglas and freshman Matt Jackman and Jaxon Plant.

Dane Baldwin had won at No. 1 singles against Devon Plant to tie with the most records of Crawfordsville tennis wins. Plant had the upper hand for the first two games but Baldwin quickly came back to win 6-1, 6-0. Juan Huesca took a 6-1, 6-0 win against Luke Welliever. However, No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles for North put the game at a draw.

Mitch Merica and Tyler Swick only gave up one game staying just ahead of Sam Lucas and Reeve Hawkins. A slam from Merica brought the match to a close with No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles still battling it out.

The Crawfordsville boys’ tennis singles defeated the Mounties in straight sets after Dane Baldwin came up for his sixth straight win against Aaron Cox.

“I was feeling great,” Baldwin said. “I hit the shots the way I knew how to.”

Baldwin is undefeated and has a big match coming up this weekend against Lafayette Jefferson, one of the four kids who beat him last year.

“I will work hard during practice and just keep playing a bunch of tennis.”

Joining Dane Baldwin on the First Team All-County for boys' tennis from Crawfordsville are Tanner Laughlin and Cameron Douglas. The duo played No. 1 doubles for the Athenians as they won county and the defending their sectional title.

Devan Plant, Mitch Merica and Tyler Swick represent North Montgomery on the first team. Plant stepped up to play No. 1 singles for the Chargers after their starter fell to an injury. Merica and Swick played No. 1 doubles and lost only to Lebanon and Western Boone in Sagamore Athletic Conference play. The Tigers and Stars went on to finish first and second in the conference.

Southmont is represented on the first team by Aaron Cox. Cox was their No. 1 singles player once again as a junior and had competitive matches with Baldwin each time they played, emerging as one of his primary competitors in the Sagamore Athletic Conference where Baldwin went unbeaten.

Chris King, Trey Barton and Reeve Hawkins represent Crawfordsville on the second team. King played No. 2 singles this year after playing doubles last season. He stepped into the second spot in place of George Go, who graduated after being very successful at Crawfordsville. Barton and Reeves were the No. 2 doubles team for the county and sectional champions.

  • Baldwin the best once again
    Thursday, October 30, 2014 8:10 PM
    Dane Baldwin left no doubt.

He won 23 matches while losing only four this year as a junior for the Crawfordsville boys' tennis team. That effort was good enough to set the school record for wins in a season at No. 1 singles and earn him the right to be the Montgomery County Boys Tennis Player of the Year for the second year in a row.

Three of Baldwin's wins came against someone that he didn't have luck with as a sophomore.

"My main individual goal was to beat Terre Haute North's No. 1 singles player (Andrew Farmer). My main goal for the team was to win the sectional," Baldwin said.

Baldwin beat Farmer three times this season. First at the Macy Invitational, again in the regular season and finally in the regional championship.

"Dane was also first team all-conference, was undefeated in county and conference and was named to the All-District 5 Team by IHSTeCA," Crawfordsville head coach Michael Demeter said. "He has a great attitude and is a good representation of the game."

The first win helped Baldwin to claim the Macy as an individual, a feat that has been rare for Athenians in recent history.
