Wow the summer is flying by. It's hard to believe the Fourth of July has already past. Last week was the mandatory IHSAA moratorium week. This means athletes and coaches must take the week off and not be at any organized high school workouts/practices.

Hopefully it was a nice relaxing week for all. My guess is there is some sore athletes today after taking a week off and hitting the weights again yesterday.

Now it's time to get ready for the fall season. Did you know the first football game of the season is just 45 days away? I bet the county football coaches know that and how many hours of practice they will have between now and then to get ready. All three schools have big spots to fill due to graduation. Who will step up and show they are worthy of the fame of Friday night lights?

North will have first-year head coach Josh Thompson leading them this season. Thompson inherits a 7-3 team from last year and has been the varsity assistant for many years under Charley German who retired from teaching and high school coaching. German of course could not just give up football, he will be an assistant at Wabash.

Mike Hammons will be in his second year at Crawfordsville. After a rough 0-10 season last year, he and his staff will be looking for a way to earn some wins and build the program.

Then there is the veteran coach Desson Hannum he is in his eighth season at the helm for the Mounties. The Mountie staff had to deal with lots of major injuries last season and had a 4-7 record. The Mounties will be helped by having a healthy Mitch Dehne back. I noticed when I was taking photos at the youth camp that Dehne has stepped up even more as a leader. He seems fired up for the season.

So mark those calendars for the August 22. Football is just around the corner. Just in case your now really excited for some football. South will be at Fountain Central, North will be home vs Benton Central and Crawfordsville will host Cascade.

Of course I'm excited for the other fall sports too. Girls golf actually tees off in less than a month. They can have matches starting Aug 4. The rest of the sports can have games starting August 18.

I noticed Crawfordsville volleyball is getting back into the volleyball groove this week by attending the team camp at DePauw. I'm sure team camps like this not only build skills but team spirit.

As we gear up for the fall sports let us know if your team is doing something special to get ready for the season. I know many coaches do fun things to build team spirit, skills and break up the grind at the same time. Let us know what fun special things you're doing and we'll be out there to get some photos and maybe a story!
