Four Southmont athletes were honored among the best student-athletes in track and field this season. Two juniors, Nick Richardson and Lucas Turner, earned first team academic All-State nods. Elijah Simms and Emily Cox, both seniors, were awarded honorable mention.
The awards were given by the Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches (IATCCC).
"Both of the seniors are extremely hard workers on the track. Both of them are essentially distance runners," said Marvin Walters, head track coach at Southmont. "Traditionally at Southmont, and I think at a lot of schools, a lot of times the distance runners are good students because they have to be self-motivated and self-disciplined to get out and put in the miles. That carries over to their school work."
Cox was the valedictorian of the class of 2014. Simms was in the top 20 students.
"The juniors are strong competitors," said Walters. "I think Lucas is number one in his class at this point and Nick is in the top 20, maybe even the top 10. Both of those boys were also distance runners and members of the cross country team."
Richardson and Lucas each were part of the 4x800m relay team.
