Through the first five innings the Crawfordsville Athenian 8th grade baseball team had the upper hand in dominant fashion against the visiting Southmont Mounties. Leading 5-0 going into the 6th, the Athenians gave up two runs in the top half and then Southmont blew the doors open in the top half of the 7th with 7 runs to put away the Athenians 9-5 on Tuesday at Baldwin Field in Crawfordsville.

It was the opening game for both squads.

Trent Johnson threw 5.1 innings for the Athenians, scattering two hits and walking two batters while striking out 10. Five walks and two hits in the top of the seventh did in the Athenians as South took advantage of the miscues. Johnson, Brenden Dowell, Brennan Burdine, Tommy Edwards, Kaile Wendelin, and Michael Smith all recorded hits for the Athenians.

Boone Welliever, Risty Bullerdick, and Cam Chadd handled the pitching duties for the Mounties. Scott Madison, Kaleb Swick, Welliever, Chadd, Derrick Miller, and Travis Michael got it done at the plate for the Mounties.

The Athenians (0-1) will host the Lafayette Squires travel team in a DH on Saturday, with first pitch for game one beginning at Noon at Baldwin Field in Crawfordsville.

The Mounties at 1-0 on the season and will travel to Tri-West on Monday, April 15 for a 6:30 p.m. start.
