Mounties take first and second at Monrovia

MONROVIA - The Southmont Mounties traveled to Monrovia on Tuesday night and did not get back from the three team meet until nearly 11 p.m. Southmont's boys dominated the meet at Monrovia with North Putnam Tuesday night. The Mounties cruised to the win scoring 90 points. Monrovia came in second with 42 and North Putnam finished with 35. On the girls' side, Monrovia was slightly better and edged Southmont 76-64. North Putnam took third with 25 points.
Southmont boys won 13 of the 16 events. Leading the way was senior Dan Barrett who won two individual events and was a member of two victorious relay teams. Barrett's pole vault of 13'2" was a personal best. He edged teammate Drake Cooksey in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.7.
That same duo teamed with Wayne Highfield and Christyan Kashon to win the 4x100 meter relay in 45.7. Barrett was also on the 4x400 relay team with Highfield, Jake Richardson and Elijah Simms.
Richardson added two individual victories of his own. He won the long jump (19'3") and the 400 meter dash (54.7). Kashon, a freshman, swept the hurdling event (110 m and 300 m) with times of 16.5 and 45.0, respectively.
"Kashon's wins in the hurdles were great considering that this was his first varsity competition," said head coach Marvin Walters. "We were excited to have several outstanding performances throughout the line ups. Dan Barrett's pole vault of 13' 2" was a personal best, as was Wayne Highfield's 10' 6"."
Simms, a junior, won both the 1600 (5:04) and the 800 (2:08) and was a member of the 4x800 relay team along with Connor Moore, Reid Fouty, and Lucas Turner. Fouty would go on to win the 3200 meter run in 11:00.
Sophomore Jason Christensen competed and won the high jump by leaping 5'10".
The Mounties were able to win 5 events with junior Jessi Shelton leading the way with 3 individual firsts. Shelton took first in the 100 meter dash (13.4), the 100 meter hurdles (17.8), and the 300 meter hurdles (53.1). Freshman Natalie Strauser was also an individual winner in the 200 meter dash (28.3).
The 4 x 100 meter relay team of freshmen Brittany Barrett and Natalie Strauser teamed with senior Alexa Richardson and Shelton to pull out the win in 53.4.
Our girls competed well," complimented Walters. "Jessi's three wins obviously were big for us. The 4 x 100 meter relay ran faster tonight than any time in the last several years. Strauser's win in the 200 was impressive."
Southmont will next compete Friday at the Charger Relays.
