Three tickets punched

NEW CASTLE – A loaded semi state welcomed eight Montgomery County wrestlers on Saturday. When the dust settled, three of those individuals found their way to the state finals. Two local grapplers claimed semi state championships.
Tanner Webster became North Montgomery’s first ever semi state champion with his win at 170 pounds. Boone Welliever became Southmont’s fourth semi state champion at 145 pounds. Charger sophomore Seth Johnson finished second at 106 pounds to punch his ticket.
Johnson started his day with an 11-2 major decision and booked his trip to state with a pin over Logan Bailey at the end of the first period. Johnson found another pin in the semifinals when he took care of Andrew Black in 3:15. Johnson met Perry Meridian freshman Brayden Lowery (44-2) in the finals where he lost a 4-0 decision.
No. 2 Johnson (43-2) will start the state finals against No. 14 Brayden Shearer (39-8) of Garrett.
Welliever got a bit of a scare in the first round when he only got through with a 4-0 decision. He got through the ticket round with a late take down of Riley Fletcher to get a 4-2 decision. Welliever used a 1-0 decision over Lawrenceburg’s Andrew Roth to get to the championship. He put an exclamation point on the day with a pin of Elliot Rodgers of Catchedral in just 1:10.
Welliever (40-0) is ranked No. 15 and will start his state finals off with unranked Brooks Wathen (43-7) of Jennings County.
Webster cruised through a very difficult bracket. He started his day with a tech fall in the second period. He pinned his way to the finals. It took him just 34 seconds to pin Troy Murry and he got past Hamilton Southeastern’s Joe Mazero in 57 seconds. Lawrenceburg senior Jake Ruberg didn’t have an answer for Webster in the finals where the Charger won 5-2.
No. 2 Webster (46-1) starts things off with Jonyvan Johnson (34-7), unranked out of New Haven.
State starts Friday night when the wrestlers will wrestle a single match at Banker’s Life Fieldhouse. Winners advance to Saturday’s 8-man bracket that will determine the order of medalists.
