Wrestlers will hit the mats Saturday at New Castle for semi state action. Eight Montgomery County wrestlers will compete in seven weight classes.
Seth Johnson is the No. 2 ranked wrestler in the state. The sophomore has just one loss this season (40-1) and it came at the North Montgomery regional in the finals to Brendan Mattingly of Carmel. Johnson starts his day with unranked Christophe Stewart of Warren Central. The quarterfinals are called the ticket round because those who advance to the semifinals book their ticket to state. Johnson will likely meet No. 6 Logan Bailey of Cathedral (30-3) in the ticket round. Looking beyond that, No. 4 Andrew Black of Shenandoah likely awaits in the semifinals. Mattingly or No. 5 Brayden Lowery should await in the finals.
Unranked Charger sophomore Parker Moseley has a first round matchup with No. 2 Alec Viduya of Roncalli. The only other ranked wrestler on his side of the bracket would come in the semifinals against No. 7 Gavin Rose of Greenfield-Central. No. 3 Skylour Turner of Warren Central is on the other side of the bracket.
Corwyn Hal, a North Montgomery senior, hasn’t been ranked at all this season, but that hasn’t deterred him from getting this far. Hall won’t see a ranked wrestler until the ticket round when No. 15 Carter Noehre of Greenfield-Central awaits with just two losses. If he stays hot, Hall won’t see another ranked wrestler until the finals.
North Montgomery sophomore Jake Lowe isn’t ranked and he’ll meet No. 2 Zach Melloh of Cathedral to start his day. No. 10 Brooks Davis and No. 13 Kody Wagner are also on the same side of the bracket. Three more ranked guys await on the other side. Lowe will need to have himself a day.
Southmont junior Dakota Ball is on the other side of this bracket and starts his day with No. 6 Riley White of Hamilton Heights. Two more ranked wrestlers, No. 17 and No. 18 share the same side of the bracket with Ball.
No. 15 Boone Welliever, a Southmont senior, is Montgomery County’s only regional champion heading into New Castle. He starts his day with two unranked wrestlers and should meet No. 4 Clayton Cowan of Hamilton Heights or No. 9 Kain Rust of Perry Meridian in the semifinal. The only other ranked wrestler in the bracket is No. 13 Antwaun Graves of Warren Central on the other side.
No. 2 Tanner Webster suffered his first loss of the season (42-1) in the finals of the North Montgomery Regional to No. 3 Thomas Penola of Zionsville. If Webster gets through the first two rounds against unranked guys, he should meet Silas Alfred of Shenandoah in the semifinals. Penola will have to get through No. 9 Jake Ruberg of Lawrenceburg on the other side of the bracket to set up a rematch with Webster in the finals.
North Montgomery senior Cole Slavens is ranked No. 11 and will have to come ready. He has an unranked wrestler in the first round and No. 2 Ben Stewart of Cathedral should await in the ticket round. No. 10 Jiam Jagow of Westfield is on the same side of the bracket.
