  • Chargers, Ruby advance

It was the performance of a lifetime. And for it, they'll play another week.

The North Montgomery girls' golf team shot the best round they've every shot at the Crawfordsville sectional and advanced with a third-place finish. The round of 365 was better than the previous best (set in 2012) by one stroke. The Chargers tied Lebanon for second place with the score and the Tigers won the fifth-golfer tie breaker.

Zionsville won the event with a team score of 332. Southmont was fourth at 407 and Crawfordsville was seventh at 474.

The Chargers got 88s from their top three golfers: Kennedy Bonwell, Abbey Woodard and Megan Douglas.

"We didn't really have a number in mind. We focused on the mental side. We wanted to focus on hitting a good shot, one shot at a time. Focus on your gameplan for that shot and execute it," North Montgomery head coach Mark Shadiow said. "Smock is a lot longer than this course. It's a different layout, different type of course. We'll work on our long approach shots and putting on the bigger greens."

  • Chargers 2nd at SAC

Temperatures were lower than they have been and scores were higher.

That was the story of the Sagamore Athletic Conference girls' golf meet on Saturday at the Crawfordsville Country Club.

After a long day of battling the conditions and the course, Lebanon went home as the winner thanks to a low round of 354. North Montgomery was second at 411. Southmont took fourth with a team score of 430 and Crawfordsville rounded out the county teams with a 465 for sixth place.

"We'll take second for sure. We knew Lebanon was going to be tough to beat. Megan (Douglas) played really well. She had 10 5s in a row," Charger mentor Mark Shadiow said. "We were hoping our scores would be a little lower than that. We were hoping we would be in the 300s. Before the sectional we need to eliminate our huge numbers. Seems like every girl has two or three just really big numbers. We have to minimize the damage."

DARLINGTON-North Montgomery got a warm up for the conference meet with a triangle affair Thursday night. The Chargers beat Western Boone (199) and Danville (222) with their score of 197.

Abbey Woodard was the medalist with a 43. Teammate Kennedy Bonwell was right behind her with a 49 and Megan Douglas stayed low with a 49.

"We didn't bring our best stuff tonight. But it was good experience for the girls to play in the cold since we are supposed to have similar temperatures for conference on Saturday," head coach Mark Shadiow said. "I think the girls played better than their scores indicated tonight. We struggled a bit on the greens but seemed to be hitting the ball pretty well overall."

North Montgomery is now 7-5 on the year and is 4-1 against Sagamore Athletic Conference opponents.
