What we should do about ISIS
Last week, the Secretary of Defense and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff described the threat arising from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in apocalyptic terms - as well they should. The unspeakable depravities committed by ISIS are enough to evoke images of death's pale horse.
However, neither in that briefing where the two national defense officials explained the dimensions of the threat, nor elsewhere in White House action have we seen an adequate response consistent with the growing danger. We must marshal all of our resources to confront this danger and act strongly, immediately and comprehensively.
This is how we should begin:

Serving Our Veterans - Veterans Administration Reforms
Like you, I was outraged at the recent Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) news stories that revealed subpar care for our veterans. That is why my colleagues and I lead passage of a bipartisan and bicameral reform bill that will improve access to care for veterans.
The legislation included many of the reforms included in H.R. 4810, the Veterans Access to Care Act, which passed the House with my support on June 10.

Happy Birthday, Coast Guard
I want to say a big belated "Happy Birthday" to those who served with the U.S. Coast Guard who has celebrated its 224th anniversary of serving the U.S. On the date of Aug. 4, 1790, the U.S. Coast Guard was formed when Congress authorized the construction of 10 vessels to enforce tariffs and trade laws, prevent smuggling and protect the collection of Federal revenue. It continues today with added responsibility of patrolling our waters for terrorist. They do a fantastic job.

Beautiful and broke
My favorite place to live in America is California. But don't get me wrong--one size does not fit all. And how wonderful that is, that people differ so much that they could be quite happy living in very different places, some in Miami, some in Houston, some in Cleveland, and some in the San Francisco Bay area. I love this since it helps to confirm my individualist position about human social life.
