Northridge left him shook up
I'm a proud Hoosier, born and bred. Sure, we've lived in just about 10 percent of this great country, but head and heart always called me back home again to Indiana.

And this week, on 10:16 Thursday morning, we Hoosiers are being asked to participate in this year's Great Central U.S. ShakeOut!

Election season hits high gear this week with debates
There's a definitive nip in the air that wasn't quite so evident a few weeks ago. If you look around, there's a lot more leaves on the ground today than last week. Those leaves that haven't fallen yet are turning colors. Down south, there's a pretty big deal being made over covered bridges. And when you drive by homes, there's some colorful items sprouting up in the lawns.

Hammer takes swing on newspapers
I really used to enjoy working Saturday mornings. The office is quiet with no one else around and I can turn on a little music, turn it up a tad if I feel like it and get things done. But somehow John Hammer manages to find a way in and tends to show up when I least expect it. For someone with a weak bladder, that's not necessarily a good thing.

These ads are sure to get business booming
If you drive by the world-wide HQ of Sagamore News Media late at night, you might just see the lights still on. That's because our crack staff is here almost 24-7 toiling away, burning the midnight oil, to find new and better ways to serve our wonderful readers and advertisers.

Thrashes of the Badges II
One week from today, police and fire (and likely a few ringers) will gather at Elston softball diamonds for Thrashes of the Badges II. It may not be Ali-Frazier or the rumble in the jungle, but it ain't a walk in the park either.

Cinnamon, Persimmon seeds and wooly worms
I'm a big fan of the folks who write regularly in our little company. As such, a couple of columns recently - one in Noblesville and the other here from Editor Frank Phillips - caught my eye because they hit on a favorite subject, the weather. Specifically, forecasts for the upcoming . . . I hate to use the word . . . winter.

Tim Timmons will return next week
Tim Timmons' column "Two Cents" will return next week. Tim is taking a well-deserved break.

State Police museum worth seeing
A recent column generated some good reader feedback. It was about the Ernie Pyle Museum and a number of you told me that you had also visited there and enjoyed it immensely.

If you didn't read it, the gist of the story is that each month our newsrooms do some training. It's more than just the Crawfordsville staff. It includes all of our folks who work on our other products, the Noblesville Times, the Sheridan News and the Hamilton County Sports Daily.

This, that and 'tuther
Maybe the sun wasn't shining much last weekend, but Crawfordsville and Montgomery County really did for the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross event just south of town.

Do they still hand out keys to the city? If so, the Tom Shaver family should get a set. Those folks have single-handedly been front and center on creating a great economic boost for our little corner of the world through this event and their annual efforts with the Ironman.

A glimpse into Timmons' world ...
On occasion I have been told that I too often refer to sports. So with apologies to Karen Zach, Ruth Hallett and a few others, please indulge me once again. (Or not. Mallard Fillmore and really good reading is just a few pages away.)

I am a Dan Dakich fan. For those who aren't into sports and haven't already turned to the funnies, Dakich is a former Indiana high school basketball star who went on to play and coach at IU (and other places) and now is - in my not-so-humble opinion - the best radio talk-show guy around.
