The May 6, primary election is just six weeks away. Key primary elections will be held for national, state and county offices. The candidates elected will be on the November ballot. Those elected in November will make decisions that affect your job, your health care, your energy costs, your security and the legacy you leave to future Americans.

All eligible citizens are urged to be a part of this important election by voting on May 6. But, you only can vote if you are registered, and the registration deadline is April 7.

Who can register? You are qualified to register and vote in the May 6 Primary if you:

• Are a citizen of the United States,

• Will be at least 18 years old on or before Nov. 4,

• Have lived in your precinct where you vote for at least 30 days prior to the election

• You are not currently in prison after being convicted of a crime.

If you have changed your name or address, you need to re-register.

Registration is easy and there are several ways to get this done. You can register in person, by mail or online.

To register in person, visit the Voter Registration Office at the Montgomery County Courthouse, 100 E. Main Street, Crawfordsville (364-6437). Karyn Douglas is the Voter Registration Deputy.

You can also register at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles located at east side of Crawfordsville Square, 1629 Eastway Drive. Mail-in voter registration applications must be postmarked on or before April 7. Copies of the Voter Registration Form can be obtained from the Voter Registration Office, Bureau of Motor Vehicles or the League of Women Voters, P.O. Box 101, Crawfordsville.

To register over the internet, visit This website also will confirm your voter registration, review candidates on your ballot, update voter registration, print a voter registration form, contact your County Election Office, contact the Indiana Election Division, find your polling place, and more.

A college student may use either a home or college address as his/her registration address. An overseas voter may not have a physical residence in a precinct, but may be entitled to vote at a precinct in Indiana.

Overseas voters include:

* Absent uniformed military services voter who by reason of active duty or service in a branch of the military, is absent from the U.S. on the date of the election;

* United States citizen who resides outside of the U.S. but intends to return to the U.S., and

* United States citizen who permanently resides in another country. In Indiana, such person is entitled only to a ballot for federal offices so cannot vote in the county and state elections.

The United States system of government works only if citizens participate. In a recent Civic Health Index, Indiana ranked 48th of the states in voter turnout. We can do better than that! But in order to vote in the May 6 election, eligible citizens must be registered by April 7.
