Voting Rights Act needs amendment
The League of Women Voters is urging Congress to pass the Voting Rights Act Amendment (VRAA) of 2014. In January, a bipartisan group of legislators introduced the Voting Rights Amendment as a workable, common sense solution that would modernize elections process and protect voting rights against discrimination.

Trains important to country
Train freight, train transportation, and train lore are woven into our country's history. From the fabled Golden Spike which linked one side of our continent to the other in 1869 to the last couple of generations of kids enamored by Thomas the Tank Engine, America's economic and cultural history has been woven into and around rail.

League celebrates 94 years of women's suffrage
August 26 marks the 94th anniversary of the constitutional amendment that granted women the right to vote. This achievement on August 26, 1920 was a result of a 72 year effort by visionary and courageous women who lectured, wrote, marched, lobbied, and organized demonstrations in support of suffrage.

The League's principles
The Principles of the League of Women Voters are "concepts of government" to which the League at all levels subscribes. They result from principles supported and positions taken by the League as a whole in fields of government to which the LWV has given sustained attention. They serve as authorization for adoption of national, state and local program and a basis for taking action at the national, state, and local levels.

Zerelda Wallace - inspiration for League
Yesterday was the 197th anniversary of the birth of Zerelda G.Wallace, stepmother of Lew Wallace. Zerelda became a key leader in both state and national suffrage associations, and her life was dynamic, resourceful, and inspirational. The League of Women Voters believes it is appropriate to annually recognize and celebrate Zerelda's role in working to gain women the right to vote.

League pleased with County Commissioners' decision
The League of Women Voters of Montgomery County was pleased the County Commissioners moved forward with plans to improve the Montgomery County Courthouse. League members have concluded that there are many factors that contribute to the economic health of a community, including healthy, vibrant downtowns, particularly our county seat.

Movie 'Vegucates' League and guests
The fifth Annual Green Issues Summer Movie Series, co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Montgomery County and the Wabash College Library, held its July session with a well-attended screening of "Vegucated" (2011).

"Vegucated" is a funny and entertaining documentary about veganism--a form of vegetarianism. Unlike more typical vegetarians, vegans don't eat any animal-based foods (e.g. no eggs, milk, butter, or honey) and don't wear any animal-based clothing ( leather, wool, or silk).

The League of Women Voters invites all residents to drop by the LWV Booth at the Montgomery County Fair July 18-24.

Information will be available about voting, voter registration, and contacting governmental officials. Free copies of FOCUS and the 2014 Political Directory will be distributed.
