It's a mish-mash of topics this week

By Tim Timmons

Oh, the weather outside is frightful. Dang if Ma Nature isn't doing her best to go along with the Christmas song. Just for the record, I'd be OK if the mercury would stay north of the freezing mark for a little bit. Please?

SAW A REPORT on TV news the other day about gas prices swinging as much as 15 to 20 cents in one Indiana community. Apparently they didn't check with us here in Montgomery County. Shucks, we've seen prices jump by 30 cents or more in a day. Many times.

A LOT OF folks have commented on how neat the pictures on the outside of the Elston Building look. We had a story about it, but just for the record, all the credit goes to photographer / artist Abbey Bullerdick. From idea to installation, it was all her. Abbey wanted to find a way to help MUFFY. Illustrating the faces of those involved with the non-profit was what she came up with. Although she tried to get me, we avoided my mug plastered on the building. No one needs to see that.

SPEAKING OF MUFFY, the days in the campaign are dwindling and the drive is far, far from its goal.

Here's something to think about. Some of us are pretty fed up with government spending in areas where we don't feel government belongs - and in order not to detour the conversation, let's just leave it at that. The thing is, if private donations fall short, then the burden ultimately ends up in the government's lap, which means you and me. If MUFFY isn't there to help in the social services field, what's left to keep those in need from sliding into welfare, courts and such?

There's time left. Please give to MUFFY.

REGULAR READERS of this column (all four of you) know that politics is routinely cussed and discussed here. We've got some interesting races coming up in the spring, none more so than the one for county commissioner. For the record, the contested seat is currently held by Republican Jim Fulwider. County GOP Chair John Pickerill has indicated he's running, which has some crying foul over the head guy in the GOP taking on one of its own. There's also discussion about who might or might not file from the Democratic side. And for sure, there's a lot of talk about an independent or three, although don't look for many independents to jump into the fray until after the primary.

Stay tuned.

I'M NO PRO FOOTBALL expert, by any stretch. In addition, I've been in the media long enough to know that you should never pass judgment on tidbits of info. So don't take this as anything more than it is, a silly observation by a Colts fan. Doesn't it seem like most times when the TV cameras show Peyton Manning on the sideline, be it in Denver or his time in Indy, he's studying print-outs from previous plays? I have yet to see Andrew Luck doing the same. What does that mean? Maybe nothing. But since the Colts have lost three of their last five I'm remembering what my mother used to tell me when I was struggling in school. Study harder!
