It's time to remember how much we owe this nation

By Frank Phillips

There were a couple disturbing posts on Facebook that surprised me last week.

Apparently, a couple of my friends do not like the idea of children reciting the "Pledge of Allegiance" in the classroom at the start of each school day.

One person suggested it would take time away from learning. Thirty seconds? Really? Are we to believe there is not 30 seconds available during a school day to teach children to respect the flag of the United States of America?

Coincidentally, those remarks came on the same week as the 50th anniversary of the Sons of the American Legion in Crawfordsville and the same week of the Past Commanders dinner at the Legion.

I have been very frank about the fact I did not serve in the military. Some can hold that against me but they will find fewer reporters or editors who have more respect for the men and women who serve in our armed forces.

Yes, I do think it's time for people to wave the flag! Yes, I do think children need to recite the "Pledge of Allegiance."

Twenty years ago I was sitting in the restaurant at the (former) Holiday Inn. It was on a Saturday and my father-in-law, Bob Davis, had invited me to go with him to a men's breakfast for Young's Chapel.

I was unemployed at the time and our family was living with my in-laws.

Mark Smith was sitting across the table from me and asked, "What are you going to do now?"

I believed the Lord would work it out.

Within three days of being unemployed and moving in with the Davises I had a job in Carmel and a part time job with WIMC radio as a disc jockey.

Twenty years ago this week,Guy Mitchell, the program director at WCVL-WIMC called me and asked me to meet him at the station in the evening.

I was supposed to play music on the air that night and thought I might be losing my job. On the way back to Crawfordsville from Carmel I kept thinking of what to do next.

At the station, Guy asked me to be the next news director at the radio station.

For me, the rest is history.

For the past 20 years, Montgomery County has been so good to my family. You have let me cover news on the radio, in print and now on the Internet. You let me come back after a six-year absence while I was the editor of the daily paper in Brazil.

The Alamo church puts up with my public speaking every Sunday. (I guess they haven't figured out what's wrong yet.)

Twenty years.

Yes, the Lord worked it out, all right, with your help. Thank you.
