There's no doubt; I'm glad that I met the Menards
Well, we never did figure out when we met, but think it was unanimous that we're glad we did! Jim and I ate with Jamie and Joanie Menard at well, you readers can guess, Pizza Hut. We spent a wonderful three hours just talking, laughing and learning about each other.

My TV show will be gone in a Flash
Have you seen "The Flash," the new TV show from DC Comics? It's on the CW network and it's about a man who becomes a super-fast superhero following a laboratory accident.

Muffin Top: A true love story
I often reference my weight struggles in this column, and then sometimes, when I meet someone, they will say, "You are not fat. I don't know why you wrote that."

I accept their words with a smile, but in my mind I am insisting, "Three weeks ago when I wrote it I weighed at least twelve more pounds than I do now! You should see me naked. It's hideous."

Hammer time on instant information
I was answering e-mails Saturday. In an earlier column I mentioned that I had four regular readers. Imagine my pleasant surprise when several e-mails pointed out that I was being too modest. Heck, there just might be as many as eight, maybe nine of you out there!

Thank-you notes seemed appropriate. But since I'm too cheap to buy a stamp when an e-mail will do, I was busily pecking away at the keyboard . . . and didn't notice John Hammer walking in until his shadow blotted out the sun. I didn't know if we were experiencing an eclipse or if my eyesight was going.

Don't say if; say when
OK. Guess what Philip and I caught ourselves talking about recently.

Opening night.

As on so many previous week nights and weekends we were finalizing our list of things to be done in the next few weeks and Philip turned to me and said "Can you think of anything else?"

I want you to know I am a Berliner
With broad grins, and open hearts, they tell their stories to anyone who takes an interest.

"I was six years old when I woke in the middle of the night, and found that my parents were gone. They were at the wall...celebrating!"

Is passenger rail on the right track?
"Is Indiana Getting on Board with Passenger Rail" was the topic addressed by Mayor Todd D. Barton and Dr. Helen Hudson at the November Lunch with the League to a full crowd at St. John's Episcopal Church.

Is capitalism cruel?
Now this issues must always be dealt with comparatively--is capitalism cruel, harsh, heartless compared to what?

Some folks I know have maintained that compared to socialism, capitalism is indeed all these things but I just cannot buy it.

Nicolle Rockenbaugh really hasn't changed a bit
When I was Children's Librarian at the Crawfordsville District Public Library, one of my fav little ones was this week's featured guest.

I appreciate the working man now
I have a new appreciation for the American working man and woman.

I'm talking about the person who works with their hands for hours on end every day, making products that their employers will sell. From Sept. 26 until Nov. 7 I was part of that workforce.

Take a moment to honor our veterans on Tuesday
There won't be a Paper tomorrow as we all take a few moments to remember and honor our military veterans.

I can't think of many things more appropriate.

For those of us who lived through a time when veterans weren't so appreciated, the outpouring of affection, admiration and gratitude for veterans today is great to see, and long overdue.

Kidney stones are no laughing matter
Kidney stones are a topic near and dear to my heart as I've had the pleasure of having three of them. Stones or calculi, from the Latin for pebble, can form and stay in the kidneys (renal calculi or nephrolithiasis) or move down the ureters, the tubes connecting the kidneys to the bladder (ureteral calculi or urolithiasis). Stones may also be found in the bladder.

I'm pretty sure I liked her as soon as I met her
I'm not sure when I met this gal, exactly, but I liked her immediately and still think she is one fantastic lady. Fairly sure that I got to know her because I admire her cousin, Tresha Cox Meadows, and it was through Tresha and her brother, Homer Cox that I likely got together with Elaine.

I recently have seen some real life and death issues
Now that the election is over, let us turn to real life and death issues.

I opened Facebook this week to read this entry:

"Megan has cancer and the doctor says she has six months to live if we don't have surgery immediately."

So many ways to say 'thank you'
When traveling internationally, most people try to learn a few basic words and phrases that will be helpful on their trip. I can't rely on my years of high school foreign language courses because I was more interested in the boy across the aisle than in learning how to ask for the location of the toilet.

Timmons talks about this, that and 'tuther
The four of you who regularly read my scribblings have asked at one time or another what this, that and 'tuther means? Back when I was a young'un, the best boss ever was Gail Hamilton. The longtime newspaper editor only made one mistake, hiring a still-wet-behind-the-ears reporter wannabe from the Lafayette Journal & Courier. That was some 33 years ago and I'm still trying to justify her faith in me.

It's in the pipeline
At my age, I was aware of what was happening. Maybe it was due to too many fatty foods; there was clearly a blockage. Mary Ellen said not to ignore the symptoms and call a professional.

Leave the Monster under your bed
A teacher asked me to address the increasing number of kids who are consuming energy drinks. What are the potential harms? The energy drink business is booming. It is the fastest growing segment of the U.S. beverage industry and big business with 2012 sales topping $12.5 billion (a 60 percent increase from 2008).

Tom McCarty has lived an exciting life
This week's interesting gentleman was "born and bred" in my hometown of Waveland, Indiana. It was a truly wonderful place with equally wonderful people where we spent our developing years.

Be sure to get out and vote
The League of Women Voters of Montgomery County urges all eligible citizens to vote in Tuesday's General Election! Voting is the most fundamental responsibility of Americans. The results of this election will significantly impact the future of Montgomery County as well as the state of Indiana, and our nation. Government CAN work if people are informed and involved in the democratic process.

Property rights and the free press
Not as if the point hasn't been made often by now, but repeating it may be of some benefit: without a firm protection of the right to private property, the rights to freedom of speech, press, religious worship, etc., are under constant threat.

Halloween brings ghoulish tales
Here's a true Halloween tale for you to think about this week.

Halloween means different things to different folks.

A young lady I know found out through some mischievous and possibly illegal means that her boyfriend bought her an engagement ring and that he plans to propose this week, on Halloween.

Some scattered notes from a scattered mind
Notes scribbled on the back of an I Like Ike campaign flyer . . .

Congrats to all who either attended or watched our webcasts of any of the debates or political forums that were put on by your friendly folks at The Paper, the League of Women Voters, Business and Professional Women and the Chamber of Commerce.
