We can be proud of Nucor
Montgomery County has been home to Nucor Steel for 25 years. Wow! It doesn't seem like it.

You can read the news stories in today's Paper and see how Nucor has grown and you can read comments that indicate what it means to the county.

Here's hoping they can get 'it' done
Here's hoping Vandalia Heritage Foundation can get it done.

"It" of course is the renovation/rehabilitation of the Ben Hur Life building on the corner of Main and Water streets in downtown Crawfordsville.

I've been known to "flip-flop" on my opinions and here I go again.

National Night Out is really good idea
I really like the idea behind National Night Out.

Crawfordsville celebrated National Night Out in fine style last night at Milligan Park.

Jane Christopherson planned for activities to fill the park from one shelter to the other. There was free swimming for an hour and lots of free food.

Greatness can come from humble beginnings
I have been thinking lately about what great things spring from the most unlikely places. Boss, forgive me, but I am going to write just a little bit more about our trip to the Ernie Pyle museum. (See Tim Timmons' column in Tuesday's edition.)

What a great fair!
There is a lot to like at the 4-H Fair again this year.

That's true every year but it seems to go by faster each time. It could have been the cooler weather, but the fair just somehow seemed really good this year.

Internships offer great opportunities
I want to say a few words in praise of interns.

Internships give people the opportunity to work in a "real world" setting for a limited amount of time. It helps a person, especially a young person, decide if they truly want to go into a certain line of work.

The more things change ...
some things never change.

Take the latest debate over false alarms. Police and fire departments are called out because someone's alarm system acts up. Or, maybe a bird gets into the house and sets off the alarm. That actually happened here not long ago.

'INTRUDER ALERT! INTRUDER ALERT!"

The poor bird must have had a coronary when the police arrived!

But this is not new.

Another take on marriage
Here's another take on the same-sex marriage controversy: Are you ready for this? Nothing, really, has changed.

I am writing this on Friday night, after the U.S. Court of Appeals in Chicago put a stay on the order allowing same-sex marriages in Indiana. But this column began before the stay was ordered. It seems to me little, if anything, was changed by the order ending the ban on same-sex marriage. Think about it.

Not free? Bummer!
Wouldn't it be great if we had some means of accessing a worldwide database of information?

If it were only available from our homes, offices and cell phones.

What if it contained movies, music and more information than the largest set of encyclopedias ever printed? What if you could read The Paper of Montgomery County from anywhere in the world?

Leave your family something better than antiques
"I spy ..." another local author's book fair in my eye. Or on my calendar, at least.

What newspaper do you own?
What newspaper do you own? It is this one!

Now, that may come as quite a shock to the people who invested to make The Paper happen, but in a real sense this is your paper. And not just the copy you plunked down 50 cents to buy, either.
