Bible and Prophecy

By Dennis E. Lynd

"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" (Gen. 1:1). This is the critical and fundamental affirmation with which the Bible opens. Our physical senses tell us the heavens and the earth presently exist. To deny the present existence of the heavens and the earth would be tantamount to denying our own rationality and dwelling place. But were the heavens and earth actually designed and created by God? Or did they somehow come into existence over vast eons of time through purely natural processes? Obviously, questions relating to the formation of our physical universe are the source of a great deal of dispute and controversy.

The Bible claims to be a revelation from the same God who created the heavens and the earth. This is not to say God has revealed everything to mortal men. Moses wrote, "The secret things belong unto Jehovah our God; but the things that are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law" (Deut. 29:29). The Bible reveals the living God is a Lawgiver, and a Judge who will one day judge all men according to the terms of the laws our Creator has revealed (James 4:12; Rom. 14:9-12). But this still begs the question; "Are the sixty-six books of the Bible actually inspired of God?"

Bible prophecy is one means by which our Creator assures us of his existence, and demonstrates these books of Scripture are actually a revelation from God. "Produce your cause, saith Jehovah; bring forth your strong reasons, saith the King of Jacob. Let them bring forth, and declare unto us what shall happen: declare ye the former things, what they are, that we may consider them; or show us things to come. Declare the things that are to come hereafter, that we may know that ye are gods: yea, do good, or do evil, that we may be dismayed, and behold it together. Behold, ye are of nothing, and your work is of nought; an abomination is he that chooseth you" (Isaiah 41:21-24).

The Bible is a concise history of Israel from the time of the Creation to a last World War which will involve a third and final desolating siege of Jerusalem; a city once loved by Jehovah (Rev. 20:7-9). Bible prophecies focus on three sieges of Jerusalem: the Babylonian, the Roman, and the Russian (Magogite). Through these prophecies, Jehovah produces His cause; distinguishing himself from the impotent false gods of the nations. As our Creator, Jehovah can not only tell us what happened "in the beginning," he can also tell us things to come.
