Where did season go
The boys' basketball sectional draw was Saturday! Boy, it seems like this season has flown by. Southmont gets to host their sectional and drew a bye and will play the winner of South Vermillion and Seeger on March 6.

The really interesting match-up will be North and Crawfordsville playing each other the first round of the sectional at Frankfort on March 3. As if playing in a sectional game is not big enough, might as well have two rival teams going at it for all the glory. North has beaten Crawfordsville twice in the season. In fact, at the Sugar Creek Classic North put an all-out beat down on the Athenians. However, beating a team three times in a season is always a tough task. Plus Crawfordsville still has pretty vivid memories of what it feels like to cut down a sectional net from last year. So who knows what will happen all I know is I'm looking forward to that game.

Senior Day extended in 1-point OT win
Wabash basketball celebrated Senior Day with a 68-67 win over Kenyon with a 68-67 overtime win in a foul-plagued regular season finale.

The visiting Lords had a chance to spoil the day for Wabash. Kenyon missed a late free throw to try and force a second overtime, but ended up with an opportunity to win. After being fouled on a three-point attempt, guard Jonathan Amador toed the free throw line with four seconds remaining and Kenyon down 68-65. Amador sunk the first two, but short-armed the last attempt. However, Kenyon forward Connor Garrity corralled the loose ball and put up a floater from the short corner as time expired. The shot rattled off the iron as the Little Giants squeaked out another victory.

"It wasn't pretty by any stretch of the imagination, but it shows how willing our guys are to stick together and fight," senior guard Houston Hodges said.

Wrestling season culminates
Hello world!

Can you believe that the state wrestling finals are here? Unreal.

It was Nov. 3 that the county grapplers had their first official practice. Three months later, there are only three wrestlers left in the county and their future all comes down to one match.

Southmont's Zach Worm and Connor Moore and North Montgomery's Jesse Archer will make the trip to Banker's Life Fieldhouse Friday night looking for one more win and a guaranteed top-8 spot in the state finals. If they win Friday, they place. If they lose, they are state qualifiers.

That's nothing to shake a stick at. These boys have worked hard to earn the title of state qualifier. Many others worked hard and won't get to make the trip this weekend. They have plenty to be proud of, but I can guarantee you that none of them are satisfied at this point. They're still grinding in the room every day to try to pull off that Friday-night win so they can start the Saturday path to wrestling under the lights.

Postseasons bring a ton of excitement
Hello world!

It doesn't get much better than the postseason, does it?

Wrestlers are headed to the semistate at New Castle. The lady swimmers just wrapped up the sectional and regional diving was completed last night. The girls' basketball sectionals also got under way last night with Southmont traveling to Fountain Central and losing a heartbreaker to Riverton Parke.

Crawfordsville and North Montgomery will get going with sectional basketball action Friday at Lebanon.

In semistate wrestling Montgomery County will be represented by 15 wrestlers at New Castle. When the action on the mats start, anyone has a shot of making it to state. They will need to win their first two rounds to advance.

Sectional's here! Are you ready?
Hello world!

Are you ready? Are you ready for hundreds of screaming fans, buzzers sounding, whistles blowing and a whole lot of tension in the air?

Well, if so, you're ready for the wrestling sectional at Crawfordsville on Saturday. Action starts at 10 a.m. Once again, Montgomery County looks to be the class of the field.

Barring unforeseen circumstances, North Montgomery and Southmont will once again be battling head-to-head for the sectional. So far this year, Southmont has been the favorite on paper, but North Montgomery has all the championships.

Let's see that school spirit! Start this weekend at CHS!
Psst! Not sure if anyone has been paying attention, but I've mentioned a couple of times in my column that Crawfordsville's boys basketball team will continue to get better as the season goes. It looked to me on Saturday night against Southmont that the Athenians are starting to prove me right. From tip to finish I would say that was their best game of the season.

The Crawfordsville boys also played a tough Fountain Central team on Friday and held their own for a good part of the game. It's amazing what a little confidence will do for a team.

A Classic to remember
Wow! How about that Sugar Creek Classic?

Each year it seems to get bigger and bigger. The crowd support for all the teams was awesome to see. I think what stood out the most to me was seeing the student cheer blocks packed with cheering students.

Crawfordsville Crazies, you really rocked the gym. I loved the themes for the cheer block. On Friday they had a beach theme. Complete with beach balls and blow up floaty things. Then Saturday, doing the ESPN sports center College Game Day theme was great. They even created the sports desk and had anchors pretending to deliver the sports scores at half. I also enjoyed the pregame show by the Crawfordsville Crazies of letting the noise out of the trash can.

Chargers win Sugar Creek Classic
North Montgomery left no doubt who the 2015 Sugar Creek Classic Champion was going to be Saturday evening, taking on host Crawfordsville. They dominated all facets of the game and used a good shooting night to pull away from the Athenians, 65-25.

This was North's 5th Sugar Creek Classic Championship in the tournaments nine year history, and their first since 2011. The Sugar Creek Classic is sponsored by The Paper of Montgomery County, Franciscan Physician Network and Franciscan St. Elizabeth Health, Crawfordsville.

"We're excited about it," said North Montgomery coach Joel Grindle. "It's a special win for us, and our seniors. They've been through an awful lot. This was their first Classic Championship game, and they didn't disappoint anyone from the North side of the county."

The Chargers raced out to an 8-2 advantage midway through the first quarter thanks to two triples by Caleb Randolph.

A three by Athenian junior Konnor Smith closed the deficit to three, at 8-5. However, North closed the quarter on a 5-0 run, thanks to an old fashioned three point play from Alex Parsons, and a Grant Gayler basket.
