Reader: Congrats to airport; shame on Rokita
Crawfordsville should be very proud of its airport. Thanks to the hard work of Myra Dunn-Abbott and others, including Mayor Todd Barton, the airport received over $2.4 million in federal grant funds to expand the runway. This is a great example of local economic development activity utilizing federal funds.

Artist has much to show for decades of work
I recently retired from Purdue after 28 years.

While there, my artwork earned worldwide notice through being published in international magazines. My work can be seen in such buildings as Matthews Hall, Wang, MSEE and Physics as well as other locations across campus. I have done many logo designs and cover illustrations for Purdue publications. One artwork was on the cover of an engineering textbook. My wife and I have distributed 200 prints of my campus artworks to staff, students and visitors.

Girl Scouts important to young ladies
How does a girl learn to embrace science and technology? Or defy gender stereotypes and become a firefighter? Or learn to resolve conflict in a healthy manner when she thinks she's just having fun.

We need to know the people with responsibility
The solution for many of the concerning problems in our society may be to transfer responsibility from the faceless bureaucracy of state and federal government to the people we know at the local level. That is an appealing solution I want to embrace.

Sing for Christmas
It is that time of year again when I have the great pleasure of announcing an invitation to join choir members in our surrounding area, for the purpose of organizing the 13th annual Community Christmas Choir.

Easier to buy a gun than to vote
It is easier to purchase a gun in Indiana than it is to vote.

In order to vote one must 1) be a U.S. citizen and a resident of Indiana, 2) be at least 18 years old, 3) not currently be in prison after being convicted of a crime and 4) be registered to vote. In order to register to vote one must have either A) a valid Indiana driver's license or B) an Indiana state-issued identification card.

Fish Fry to salute agriculture
We would like to show our appreciation to our local agriculture industry by honoring them with "A Salute to Local Agriculture" as our 2014 theme for the Darlington Fish Fry and Festival Parade. We hope to showcase farm implements, other agriculture related businesses, and farm families.

Talk about cost as well as promotion
In response to Mr. Utley's letter of Aug. 11 in The Paper of Montgomery County: No one can help but be appreciative of a volunteer.

However, I am getting tired of the promotional bragging about MCED, Montgomery County Economic Development. Shouldn't it stand on its own merit?

Some student loans are misappropriation of money
Misguided legislation allowing for-profit colleges to receive student loans, federal grants and financial aid is a misappropriation of tax dollars offering little benefit to students, and potentially limiting economic growth.

Student loan debt in the U.S. has doubled since 2007 and now totals almost one trillion dollars, surpassing credit card and auto loan debt.

Professional services should be bid out, too
Questions that come to mind from the Montgomery County Security/ADA Compliance/Parking Lot project:

Why should a government project above a certain dollar amount have to be bid out, but a professional service for the government above that dollar amount does not? Shouldn't we get the best price for our tax dollars also for engineering services, general contracting, insurance etc?

Physician with Ebola paid high price in desire to help others
As I write this, I don't know if Indianapolis native Dr. Kent Brantly is dead or alive. But I do know why he recently left the United States to care for patients in Liberia suffering from the Ebola virus, with which he has become infected himself.

It's easy to install solar power
I would like to demonstrate to the citizens of Crawfordsville how practical and easy establishing a partially solar powered home is here in our fair city and how this can actually save you money. I have recently installed solar panels on my house in the center of the city. The cost was less than the average used car and the benefits will accrue for at least the next 30 years.

Power plant not really 'green'
Last weeks ribbon cutting for the repurposed Crawfordsville Power Plant purchased by Sterling Energy Group was a well-attended event with many smiling faces anticipating the maintenance of a handful of jobs in the community. While I applaud Mayor Barton's attempt to find a way to find value in an old building, I am concerned that the risks regarding keeping this coal fired power plant operating does not warrant the small benefits that may be gained by continuing its operation.

Community Policing program is a decade old
My name is Bob Rivers and I am a Detective Lieutenant with the Crawfordsville Police Dept. I started full time with the Police Department on July 27th 1997. I worked for nearly 10 years in the Patrol Division, having held the rank a Patrol Officer and then Patrol Sergeant. I was transferred to the Detective Division early in 2007 where I am currently assigned. I have been a hostage negotiator with the SWAT team since 2000 and have been involved in Community Policing since 2004 when then Chief Kurt Knecht approached me about the concept.
