Olympics of Motocross Back in Town Next Weekend
It’s back!
The highest level of racing on the planet is coming to the motorsports hotbed just south of beautiful downtown Crawfordsville the first weekend in October. The world’s most prestigious and single-largest professional motocross event will descend on Montgomery County and the city of Crawfordsville for the 78th running of the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations.
Ironman Raceway will become the fifth different United States venue to host what is affectionately referred to as the “Olympics of Motocross” for a three-day affair, October 3-5, where 34 countries and two international delegations will vie for the coveted Chamberlain Trophy and the distinction of being the best in the world.
No event carries more enthusiasm, fanfare, and national pride than the MXoN, where each country is represented by a hand-selected lineup of its top three athletes. Each national team will assign an athlete to one of three racing classes – MXGP, MX2, and Open – with each racer competing twice. Race 1 will consist of MXGP + MX2, followed by Race 2 with MX2 + Open, and concluding with Race 3 with MXGP + Open. Each athlete’s finishing position will be tallied toward an overall total for each nation, where Olympic scoring will determine the event champion. The country with the lowest total will claim the Chamberlain Trophy.
Both the MXGP and Open classes will feature 450cc motorcycles, while MX2 comprises 250cc motorcycles. A total of 108 athletes from across the globe will compete, making the MXoN the largest and most diverse gathering of racing talent on the planet.
The lineup for Team USA will consist of three of the sport’s biggest and most successful stars, anchored by four-time AMA Pro Motocross Champion and two-time AMA Supercross Champion Eli Tomac (Colorado). He will be flanked by fellow AMA Pro Motocross Champion and AMA Supercross Champion Chase Sexton (Illinois) and rising star Haiden Deegan (California), the reigning back-to-back AMA Pro Motocross Champion. The host nation is the standard bearer of success at the MXoN, having claimed 23 victories in 46 attempts, with the USA’s most recent triumph coming on home soil in 2022 from Michigan’s RedBud MX. That winning team also included Tomac and Sexton, who will both chase a second victory alongside newcomer Deegan, who is set to make his MXoN debut.
The defending MXoN Champion is Australia, who broke through for the country’s first win at the event last year at Matterley Basin in the United Kingdom. The team from down under will seek to defend its crown with the same lineup that led Australia to victory one year ago, headlined by the sibling duo of Jett and Hunter Lawrence. Jett Lawrence is arguably the sport’s most high-profile star at the moment, having captured two AMA Pro Motocross Championships, one AMA Supercross Championship, and a pair of SuperMotocross World Championships since the 2023 season. He has been mirrored nearly every step of the way by his elder brother, Hunter Lawrence, who has captured back-to-back runner-up finishes in AMA Pro Motocross and tied Jett for the SuperMotocross World Championship last year. Rounding out the team is Kyle Webster, a three-time and reigning Australian National Champion.
Festivities for the 2025 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations kick off on Friday, October 3, with the Nucor Grand Parade of Nations, where all 36 nations’ entries are formally introduced to fans in attendance. On-track action begins on Saturday, October 4, with qualifying races for each respective class. The event will culminate on Sunday, October 5, with the final trio of races to determine which country will emerge triumphant.
Race fans from across the globe will make the journey to Indianapolis in support of their home country, with tens of thousands of passionate supporters prepared to line the fences and fill the hillsides around Ironman Raceway to fly their flags, adorn their nation’s colors, and cheer on their racing compatriots.
