Notes from a 1982 Calvin College (in Grand Rapids, Mich.) postcard that offers a Crawfordsville connection . . .

I HAD A boss a few decades ago who, when asked what she was doing, would answer “this, that and ‘tuther.” I never did learn what ‘tuther meant but she was the best boss I ever had, so I have kept her memory alive by borrowing the expression now and again. And many of you know, of course, that I’m talking about Gail Hamilton.

IF YOU HAVEN’T seen the full page of businesses and how many year’s they’ve been around in today’s paper, please take a look. What a cool page, with a walk down memory lane! For example, it struck me how close Wabash College is to celebrating its 200 year anniversary! And CEL&P has been around for 131 years! In fact, Tri-County Bank, Hunt & Son and Etter Ford all topped the century mark. How impressive is that!

SPEAKING OF that page, as my buddy Honest Hoosier would say, here’s a tip of that proverbial seed corn cap to Judi Wooton. If you own or run a local business chances are you’ve talked with Judi. She’s the one who calls and bugs you! I hope you think that’s OK. The only way businesses are going to survive these days is to keep pedaling as fast as they can, and that’s exactly what Judi does for us. My hat’s off to her!

WAS LOOKING through an old Southmont yearbook from 1987 and it brought back a lot of memories of days gone by. Saw an even older CHS yearbook that brought back memories from my youth. So then I pulled out a couple of my old yearbooks from the early 1970s and reminisced. For the record, it’s not a bad thing to do every now and then. It not only reminds us of days and friends we may have forgotten, but it is a picture into a simpler and certainly more innocent time.

IN THAT South yearbook I noticed a picture of ag teacher Gary Mosbaugh. Funny thing, he doesn’t look tremendously different than he did 15 years before that in his Noblesville High School yearbook.

A FEW Vietnam vets reached out in the last few days. One said that the withdrawal from Afghanistan is eerily similar to Vietnam. Another said the two events were nothing alike. One of the vets is from here, but the other is from another state. They don’t know each other. It just goes to show that almost everything in life is about perspective. And it’s a good reminder that we are each entitled to our perspectives. We may not get to have our own “facts,” but how we view things is up to each of us. And that’s the way it should be.

THERE’S A rumor going around that John Hammer and Bubba Castiron might be available in book form? Stay tuned.

PENULTIMATE NOTE for this week – and it’s an appeal. Like so many businesses, we are having trouble finding help. If you are retired and wanting to work part time . . . or just starting out and wanting full-time . . . or ANYTHING in between, reach out to me. Please! We really want to talk to you.

AND LAST NOTE . . . Calvin College postcard? Little Giant fans will remember that’s the site where Coach Mac Petty led his basketball squad to the NCAA Division III National Championship. Hard to believe that next year will mark 40 years since that wonderful event took place!
