Today’s Montgomery County Movies column brings tidings of great joy. Last week in this newspaper a story ran announcing a concert by Bob Milne, (Mill-n) “considered to be the best ragtime / boogie-woogie pianist in the world” will be held at Southmont High School this coming Sunday afternoon, August 23 at 1:30 p.m.

Well, as another remarkable MCM “coincidence” yours truly loves ragtime music and is a great fan of Mr. Milne. I’ve been to two of his concerts in Indianapolis and own four of his CD albums from which, back in the day, I played several selections on the radio.

Coincidence #2: The same yours truly has written the lyrics for a boogie-woogie song to be performed by MCM cast member Olivia McKinna while the credits are rolling at the end of the movie.

Yes, the lyrics have been written but we hadn’t yet found anyone who would agree to compose and play Olivia’s musical accompaniment. Plus, just a short while ago we announced we would show the movie the week of Halloween, as of this writing less than three months away.

What’s that? Bob Milne is coming here for a concert. No he’s not a local resident. He lives in Lapeer, Michigan. But he’s performing at Southmont High School. If we might get him to record the song here it would fulfill our requirement of his having a connection with Montgomery County. Could it be possible we might entice Mr. Milne to compose music to fit my lyrics?

Dream on Munro! This man has been declared a National Treasure, filmed and documented for future generations by the Library of Congress. He’s a Musical Ambassador for the United States Dept. of State, has performed numerous times in Japan, also before members of the Swiss Parliament at the U.S. Embassy in Berne and other locations world-wide.

Hold on there! Don’t panic. A good salesman never assumes his client will say no. As Producer of this movie that’s been my job for the last 3 years. If I hadn’t asked for the impossible this movie would never have been made.

So first I contacted the sponsor of this event, the non-profit Roachdale Revitalization Cooperative Alliance (RRCA) they said something like, “Sure, we’d love to have Mr. Milne record your song with Olivia during his visit with us. Give it a shot.”

So I did!

And he will!

And you’re invited!

If you would like to see a portion of our movie being filmed while Olivia McKnna sings and “The best ragtime / boogie-woogie pianist in the world” performs and explains the history of ragtime music, come see us. And bring a friend or two.

Admission tickets to this Sunday, August 23 concert may be purchased at the Auditorium door in Southmont HS on US 231 near New Market. Doors open at 1 p.m. Concert begins at 1:30 p.m. Price is $15 for Adults, Children 12 & under $7. Included during intermission will be complimentary snacks, deserts and drinks provided by the Roachdale Delta Theta Tau Sorority. Proceeds will be used by RRCA to fund additional local community and cultural events.

You can bet your “woogie” I’ll be there.

As for today . . . that’s a wrap.

Dick Munro is the executive producer of the Montgomery County movie.
