A stellar defensive performance and a big rushing game from Zak Searle Friday night sparked North Montgomery to a 28-6 high school football victory at Southmont.
The Chargers’ second consecutive victory against their county rival gave the school its first 3-0 start since 2012. North Montgomery seeks its first 4-0 start since 2009 Friday night when it plays host to Lebanon.
Searle rushed for 164 yards on 32 carries, spearheading a Chargers offense that piled up 342 yards.
North Montgomery held Southmont (1-1) to 83 net yards. Nick Norman had a sack among his three tackles for loss. Searle was just as effective on defense, recording a sack and two tackles for loss.
Searle’s 6-yard run gave the Chargers a 6-0 lead in the second quarter. Southmont tied the game when Carson Chadd broke away for a 68-yard touchdown run. Chadd finished with 89 yards on eight carries.
North Montgomery took the lead for good, 12-6, before halftime on the first of two Donavan touchdown passes to Logan Kelly.
Haworth’s 9-yard TD pass to Kelly gave the Chargers a 20-6 lead going into the fourth quarter. Searle wrapped up the scoring by catching a 6-yard pass from Haworth.
Haworth completed seven of 14 passes for 87 yards. Gabe Laws made seven tackles for North Montgomery.
Linebacker Riley Woodall was credited with 14 tackles for Southmont, which travels to Frankfort (1-2) next Friday at 7 p.m.
Western Boone 48, Crawfordsville 14
The two-time reigning Class 2A state champion Stars earned their first victory of the season at the Athenians’ expense.
Underwood was 17 of 28 passing for 144 yards. His 24-yard touchdown pass to McLemore in the second quarter halted a run of 28 points to start the game by Western Boone.
Fields, who picked up 75 yards on 14 carries, rounded out the scoring for Crawfordsville with a 5-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Underwood completed the two-point pass play to Wills.
Hernandez caught five passes for 59 yards for the Athenians (0-3), who travel to Danville for a 7 p.m. game Friday. Danville has not played since winning its season opener 21-7 against Franklin on Aug. 21.
