The Crawfordsville Lady Athenians swimming and diving team is coming into this season looking to fill the void of last year’s senior class. The Lady Athenians last season were able to claim the sectional title and the team under the direction of Head Coach Kevin Hedrick will attempt to defend their sectional title.

Coach Hedrick talked about the goals he has and the expectations for the defending sectional champs as they start preparing for another season.

“The goal this season is to fill the gap left from last years’seniors,” Hedrick said.  We will strive to improve each meet and hopefully get a top three finish at conference and sectional.  The expectation is that each member of the team will push each other to give an effort that will allow significant improvement.”

The Lady Athenians will be returning some key members from last year’s sectional championship team. Faith Rogers will return as she was a regional qualifier in diving last season for the Athenians. The top point returner from last season will be Alyx Bannon and both Abby Bannon and Isabelle Rich will be two of the captains for Coach Hedrick’s squad.

“Alyx is going to be not only our top point returner from last season but also our top sprinter,” Hedrick said. “Both Abby and Isabelle will also provide the leadership we need in order to be successful this season.”

With practice getting underway and the team not having their first meet until Nov. 26 when they will host Fountain Central, Hedrick talks about the things he is focusing on in practice with his team.

“Teaching the girls the proper technique will be the first priority we have,” Hedrick said. After we get that down, then we’ll be able to focus on effort.  This goes for both of our teams; they must develop good habits in order for the training to be successful, which will translate into individual improvement and then team success.”

The Athenians have the luxury of hosting numerous big meets this season. Crawfordsville will host the following meets this season.

- Dec. 21: County Meet
- Jan. 16, 18: Conference Meet
- Jan. 24-25: Athenian Invite
- Feb. 6, 8: Girls Sectionals
- Feb. 20, 22: Boys Sectionals

With having the biggest meets of their season in their home pool, Hedrick talks about the advantage that his team will have for those meets.

“Hosting County, Conference, Sectional is and will always be a huge advantage for our athletes,” Hedrick said. “It allows our awesome parents to show their spirit and be loud and proud.  Our newly renovated pool will provide the best opportunity for all teams to swim their best and enjoy the environment that has became a tradition since 1993.

The Lady Athenians will begin their sectional title defnese on Nov. 26 when they along with the boys team  will host Fountain Central.
