The Crawfordsville Athenian girls’ soccer team was able to pick up their first win on the season on Wednesday night as the team hosted South Vermillion and came away with a 1-0 victory. Coming into the matchup the Athenians sat at 0-9. The lone goal for the Athenians was scored by Freshman Lorelei Schmitzer Torbert with a little over four minutes remaining in the game.

“I think this win was the uplift that our team needed half way through the season,” Head Coach Laurie Vellner said after the win. “It definitely was a great feeling not only for us a coaching staff, but most importantly for our girls to come away with their first win.”

The Athenians controlled the ball for much of the game and were able to be aggressive and attack the goal which has been an emphasis for Vellner and her staff this season.

“I think that was a huge confidence boost for us tonight,” Vellner said of her team’s offensive performance. “We’ll go back and watch film so we can show them that they can possess the ball and move the ball down the field for most of the game.”

Torbert in her freshman season has been a huge bright spot for the Athenians. Vellner has mentioned previously how she is years ahead of where players her age usually are. Even though Torbert doesn’t hold the title of one of the team captains for the Athenians, Vellner said that doesn’t make her one of the leaders of the team.

“She definitely is a leader for us,” Vellner said of her freshman. “Right now she leads us in goals and I think you’re number one goal scorer should be a leader on your team.”

Torbert leads the Athenians with three goals now on the season. The win improves the team’s record to 1-9 on the season. The Lady Athenians will look to build off of tonight’s win as they are back in action tomorrow as they travel to Sheridan.
