NEW MARKET – The Southmont Mounties volleyball team hosted Sagamore Conference opponent Lebanon on Tuesday night. This matchup featured two of the top teams in the SAC with the Mounties having a record of 11-2 and the Tigers 9-4.

The two teams battled back and fourth all night and it came to a fifth and final set to determine a winner. The Mounties were able to pull through and come away with the victory 3-2 by a final score of 25-17, 24-26, 25-18, 21-25, and 15-11. Head Coach Lauran Thompson talked about her team’s perseverance in the five-set win.

“I just told them that they’re a resilient group,” Thompson said. “We’ve been battling some injuries and even had a girl who left because she was sick tonight an hour before the match. They just find ways to win never give up and down the road when we’re playing in the tournament I hope that nights like these will serve us well.”

In the fourth set the Mounties almost put the game away, but their comeback fell just short. Down 13-22, the Mounties rallied to lose by just four points.

As the team posts a 12-2 record Thompson knows that her team can play even better and has her girls focused on that.

“The best thing is we aren’t even playing our best volleyball yet,” Thompson said. “It’s exciting to think about what we can be when we are at that point. Our record and the success we’re having so far speaks to the work ethic that our girls have.”

Thompson mentioned that she uses a seven girl rotation in her lineups. The Mounties are able to find success with having multiple people playing multiple possessions. Thompson talks about that versatility that her team is able to have.

“It’s really nice to have those different options out there on the court ,” Thompson said . “If someone isn’t on their A-game that night it always helps when you can have one of your talented JV girls give you some sets out there.”
