  • A wild week for the Colts

    Just when we thought the Indianapolis Colts could put their miserable 2017 campaign behind them and look forward to a brighter 2018, Tuesday happened.
    The horseshoe fired Chuck Pagano before the guys were able to gather their belongings and get out of the locker room, following their 22-13 victory over the Houston Texans in week 17 to finish the season a dismal 4-12.
    Owner Jim Irsay and general manager Chris Ballard started their quest to find the right guy for Indy. Their search took them right to their arch enemy, and their nemesis, the New England Patriots and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.
    The two sides agreed that following the Patriots ouster of the playoffs, which we would all agree, we were happy to see the Philadelphia Eagles beat them in the Super Bowl, he would become the head man.

  • Spring on the horizon

    Just curious, who’s ready for the smell of fresh cut grass, the popping of the mitt, and the crack of the bat? If you answered, “me”, we’re in the same boat.
    With the girl’s high school season winding down to its final weeks before sectional, and the boys season hitting the midway point, it’s never too early to turn our attention to America’s pastime. 
    24-days! Yes, just 24-days, February 12, before the New York Mets pitchers and catchers report in Port St. Lucie, FL. The position players report as early as February 18.
    The defending World Series champion, Houston Astros, pitchers and catchers report on February 13, and position players on February 19.
    If high school softball or baseball is more your forte, you’re in luck. The ladies have just 45-days until their first official practice, March 5, and the boys 52-days, or March 12. However, if you’re a regular around athletic venues lately, you’ll hear the crack of the bat and the pop of the glove as the players are getting ready for Spring.

  • Jalen Hurts showed true spirit

    Wow, what a college football bowl season! The B1G, or Big Ten, went 7-1 in bowl matchups, and would’ve been a perfect 8-0, had the Michigan Wolverines not had a meltdown in the fourth quarter of the Outback Bowl against South Carolina.
    The conference’s domination led many to question the decision by the BCS selection committee to not include Ohio State in the final four, instead going with eventual National Champion Alabama.
    No question, the Buckeyes possibly deserved the nod to be the fourth team in this year, but after the last two Big Ten performances in the BCS playoff, Ohio State’s 31-0 loss to Clemson in the Fiesta Bowl in 2016, and Alabama’s 38-0 smashing of Michigan State in the Cotton Bowl in 2015, may have been reason to keep a B1G team out.
    Instead Alabama brought home their fifth National title in nine years by getting a little revenge over No. 1 Clemson, who beat the Crimson Tide 35-31 to win last year’s National Championship, by rolling the Tigers 24-6 in the Sugar Bowl.

  • SMITH: Free throws aren't free

    The term free throw is defined in the Merriam-Webster dictionary as “an unhindered shot in basketball made from behind a set line and awarded because of a foul by an opponent.” A pretty loose definition, in my opinion, because that one point that you receive for making that shot can make a huge difference in a game.
    I’ve watched many high school, college and pro basketball games where a free throw made here and there wins a game or sends it into overtime. Heck, we’ve had two local games this week where a free throw or two made by the home team wins the game and sends their fans home happy.
    The free throw, the most wide open look you’re going to see multiple times a game, comes 15-feet away from the basket. There are generally four players from the opposing team, and two from your own joining you on the lane. Hit the two free throws, or in some cases three, when you’re fouled on a 3-point shot, and it’s as good as making the basket. Miss it, and well, it could be a four point swing, if you miss both and the other team scores.

  • SMITH: Busy sports weekend

    My kids often wonder how my wife and I survived when we were younger. We didn’t have a cell phone, although I was cool and had a bag phone in college, that would connect to the internet with the push of a button. We had to use a pay phone and call collect for our parents to know when to pick us up, and we actually rode in cars with no seat belts and actually slept in the back window, or maybe that was just me? 
    When we were younger, who knew about the internet, that is until Al Gore invented it...he did right? We used the dewey decimal system and Encyclopedia Brittanica, do they print that anymore? Our entertainment included watching Cowboy Bob and Janie and sometimes on a Saturday night, when you were brave, Sammy Terry might end up on the television.

  • SMITH: Basketball Potpourri

    If you were at Saturday’s Sugar Creek Classic Championship game at Southmont between the host Mounties and the Crawfordsville Athenians, you saw a classic. If the game was broadcast on ESPN, they would’ve had a replay later that evening after the Sportscenter, and it would’ve still received great ratings even at 2 a.m.
    I’d love to discuss the game with you, but I’m sure you’ve heard, or read, all about it. If you weren’t there, you missed a great game. From Cam Chadd and Kaleb Swick’s big three’s to tie it up, to Trent Johnson finding James Gineris for the game winner.
    Now, if you missed that one, you’re in luck. The two teams will meet again a week from tomorrow, January 21 at Crawfordsville. The girls will start off the night around 6 p.m. followed by the boys game around 8 p.m.. Do yourself a favor, the rematch may be as good as advertised, just like this past Saturday’s game.

  • SMITH: Looking back at the year in sports

    2016 may have been one of the best years ever in sports on both the national and international scene. Not only because the Chicago Cubs ended the Curse of the Billy Goat, but also Believeland, or better known as Cleveland, came back from a 3-1 NBA Finals deficit to win the NBA Championship in seven!
    Let's start with perhaps the biggest sports story of the year, and that's the Cubs. Trailing in their best of seven series, 3 games to 1 with one home game remaining. The North Siders pulled off the improbable comeback after blowing both 4-run and 3-run leads in game seven, only to win it in the Top of the 10th on base hits by World Series MVP, Ben Zobrist, and Miguel Montero denying Cleveland back-to-back championships in the NBA and MLB.
    The Cavaliers gave Cleveland their first title, in any sport, since 1964. The Cavs had to win 2 of their last 3 on the road. Game 7 was in the balance until Lebron James came up with a huge block to secure the victory over the Golden State Warriors, who, by the way, broke the Chicago Bulls record for wins in a regular season as they finished 73-9.

  • SMITH: Holiday Traditions and the Colts

    The Christmas season at the Smith household “officially” starts the Friday after Thanksgiving with cutting down our tree! However, just like any kid who has a package under the tree, their curiosity gets them, and they sometimes shake it to see if they can tell what’s inside. That’s my spouse and boys whenever Christmas music pops up on their favorite music streaming service, they just can’t help but listen to it early!
    That’s also usually the time the Elf on a Shelf, or as we call him “Buddy”, if you’ve ever seen the movie “Elf”, you know where that derives from, makes his first appearance. You see, as your kids get older, Buddy loses his magic and luster and then he almost just becomes another Christmas ornament. He’s currently hanging from a light tree near the front door and needs to be saved from his sure fall to become a dog toy!

  • Coaching carousel continues

    If you’ve been anywhere close to a television, or receive alerts from a sports apps on your smart device, no doubt you’ve seen all the craziness that’s taken place this week with Division 1 college football coaches. There are 17 coaching vacancies the week after the season ended, with all due respect to Army and Navy who play their annual battle in Philadelphia Saturday. It’s almost like the last day of free agency in baseball or basketball.
    No doubt, if you’re a college athletic director, and you want to make any moves in your football program, you need to do it sooner rather than later. There are prized recruits that the new coach/coaches need to firm up their verbal commitments and put at ease those who have already signed. You also have recruiting that’s taking place and alumni relations, something most every college coach has to deal with.

  • Just another Wednesday in Wrigleyville

    CHICAGO – Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2016, appeared on the outside as just another night on the North side of Chicago. The bars around Wrigleyville were packed, and there were people milling around the ballpark and neighborhood streets.
    However on the inside there was a sense of nervousness and anticipation that their beloved Chicago Cubs - the lovable losers - were on the brink of having done something that neither they, nor the North side of Chicago, have seen able to do since 1908 . . . and that’s win a World Series title.
    My son Connor and I made the trek from Crawfordsville in hopes that we could watch the game somewhere and just be in the presence of a couple hundred thousand Cubs fans should our team pull off the impossible, which is come back from a 3-1 deficit to win the Series, and win the last two on the road.

  • Game Seven

    By the time this story is published, the world will already know who the 2016 World Series champion will be! Will it be Matt Rogers’ Cleveland Indians, who haven’t won a title since 1948, or my beloved Chicago Cubs, who we all know have gone 108-years since their last championship. See, I wrote this just hours after the Cubs 9-3, game six win to send it to the seventh game.
    I know you’re asking yourself why, and I have a great answer . . . OK, I couldn’t sleep in anticipation of Wednesday!
