Former Crawfordsville Mayor and CHS football coach Glenn Knecht passed away Monday at the age of 85.
Following 17 years of coaching football and track at Crawfordsville, Knecht was elected mayor and served from 1976 to 1988. He moved into engineering sales after his time as mayor.
In honor of Knecht and the impact he made, Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb directed flags in Montgomery County to be flown at half-staff to honor Knecht. Flags should be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on the day of his funeral, Friday, April 5, 2019.
While at Crawfordsville High School, Knecht tallied a 100-60-7 record in football, becoming the first CHS football coach with 100 wins. He was inducted into the CHS and Indiana High School halls of fame. His 1968 Athenians were undefeated. He coached the Sagamore Conference Championship teams in 1968, 1972 and was IFCA Class AA “Coach of the Year” in 1972. CHS enjoyed two track conference championships, 1 sectional championship and three individual track state champions under his leadership.
A funeral mass is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Crawfordsville. Family and friends may pay their respects from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at the church.
