FISHERS – Every fall, Wasson Nursery hosts the Great Pumpkin Festival: a day filled with family, food, activities and giant pumpkins. The main attraction of the festival is the Great Pumpkin Weigh-off featuring growers of the Indiana Pumpkin Growers Association.
On Sept. 28, Mark Goodman of Marion, set a new Indiana record for the largest pumpkin ever recorded. His winning pumpkin tipped the scales in at 1,781 pounds.
Goodman has been growing giant pumpkins since 2006 but his first one that weighed over 1,000 pounds was grown in 2016. He largest pumpkin to date before beating the record was 1,739 pounds, and was the previous record holder. He credits a lot of the success of the pumpkins to having properly ammended soil and compost.
His pumpkins are grown from the giant seeds from the previous season since genetics are a large factor in the continued success. Look for the record-breaking pumpkin currently on display at Wasson Nursery on 126th St. in Fishers.
The Great Pumpkin Festival is one of Wasson Nursery’s favorite events. Besides the Great Pumpkin Weigh-Off, this year’s event featured many family friendly activities such as pony rides, a petting zoo, bounce house, face painting, pumpkin painting, and a balloon artist. In addition, Fishers fire fighters raised over $1,200 for the Fishers Fire Foundation’s annual Chili Cookoff, also at the Great Pumpkin Festival.
