Byron C. Hamm Jr., 89, of Crawfordsville, passed awat at home unexpectedly on Jan. 10, 2020.
He was born Oct. 3, 1930 in Crawfordsville, to Byron C. Hamm Sr. and Opal Dicken Hamm.
Mr. Hamm was a 1948 graduate of Crawfordsville High School. He married Eleanor Ruth Brown on July 24, 1950 in Ringgold GA. She preceded him in death on March 2, 1988. He married Roberta A. Nickle on Oct. 27,1990; she survives.
Mr. Hamm served his country as a United States Marine during the Korean Conflict stationed in California and Japan. Following his service he became a member of the American Legion. He worked at RR Donnelley for 17 years, operated Sunoco service stations at I 74 and SR 32 Crawfordsville and I 70 and SR 59 in Brazil where he was certified in air conditioning, tune ups, brake and exhaust. Mr. Hamm had a degree in Motel Management of Hudson, OH. He retired from Plastic Innovations in 2002.
He was a 70 year member of Young’s Chapel Christian Church where he served as an Elder for 50 years. He also served as Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday school teacher, youth sponsor and teacher, serving many years as Chairman of the Board for the church. He was a past president of the West Central Indiana Mens Fellowship. He served 18 years as forwarding agent for missionary Robert Shelton.
Survivors include his wife, Roberta A. Nickle; his children, Kathryn (Jeff) Brooks, Timothy (Janice) Hamm, Michael ( Laurie) Hamm, Lesa (Dave) Henderson, Cindy (Rick) Talbert and David Staley; grandchildren, Stephanie Pinkard, Joshua Brooks, Ryan Hamm, Bethany Stutzman, Kristina Brooks, Mark Hamm, Trevan Hamm, Hannah Ridenour, Abigail Henderson, Kris Stephen, Shannon Black, Timothy Whiteaker, Scott Staley and Alissha Staley; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; his brother, Damon Hamm; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Velma Ritter and Marjorie Vaughn; and brother, Ramon Hamm.
Services are scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 16, 2020 at 11 a.m. at Hunt & Son Funeral Home in Crawfordsville; with Gary Edwards officiating. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery North. Friends and family may pay their respects by calling on Wednesday, Jan. 15 from 4 – 7p.m.
