We wish to inform you of the passing of Herman Allen Smith on Monday, July 9, 2018.
Mrs. Smith was born on Sept. 26, 1931 to Everett and Opal Smith of Advance, Ind. and was raised on the family farm in Boone County.
He attended Providence Christian Church and was baptized on Sept. 2, 1945. He graduated from Jackson Township High School in 1949. He proudly served his country in the Navy during the Korean War. Mr. Smith served as a Communications Technician, Second Class at the U.S. Naval Communication Stations in Guam and Washington, D.C. He and his wife, Mary Jo Ward, of Mace, returned to the family farming business in Montgomery County and later Parke County. Herman was active with Parke County 4-H and served on the Parke County Fair Board and served as Beef Superintendent. He was a long time member of the American Legion in New Ross and later in Kingman. He attended the Methodist Church in Kingman.
Herman and Mary Jo proudly raised four children, Randy Smith of Ozark, Ariz., Melinda (Tim) Athey of Clinton, Pam Smith of Bloomingdale and Deb (Butch) Hammond of Stockwell.
Additional survivors include nine grandchildren TJ (Melissa) Smith, Shannon Smith, Matthew (Amy) Athey, Lori (Jeremiah) Brown, Natalie McCall, Amanda (Stevie) Phillips, Josh Reynolds and Megann Reynolds; nine great-grandchildren
He was preceded in death by his wife and a grandson, JT Hammond.
Graveside funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at Greenlawn Cemetery in Darlington. A celebration of life will follow at the Darlington American Legion from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
