Tom Gerald made his final departure on Runway 22 on Monday, April 17, 2017 with his family at his bedside, into the loving arms of Jesus.
Mr. Gerald was born Aug. 16, 1940, in Ladoga to Houston and Florence Nichols Gerald.
He graduated from Ladoga High School in 1960. He worked at Allison’s in Indianapolis for 30 years, retiring as a supervisor in 1992. He then started his own business, “Tom’s Auto Repair and Carpentry.” Mr. Gerald was a member of Woodland Heights Christian Church where he served as Trustee, Deacon, carpenter, mechanic, choir member, member of Roy’s Rangers, member of Rick Sword’s Sunday School Class and Oasis Cook Team. He was a former member of Ladoga Christian Church. He was a member of Russellville Community Christmas Choir, Ladoga Jaycees, Ladoga Masonic Lodge and Roachdale Eastern Star. He served on South Montgomery School Board as President. Mr. Gerald pursued his lifelong passion and obtained his private pilot’s license. He flew single engine Cessnas. You could say he walked around with his head in the clouds as he would always rather be flying. He loved sports whether participating, watching his children and grandchildren play or watching Purdue play anything (“Go Boilers!” he would cheer). He became a devoted band booster when his daughters marched with the Southmont High School Band, which spurred a long cherished friendship with band director James Patton. Mr. Gerald never met a stranger or turned one away. He was always ready with a joke and a smile. He could fix anything and loved doing so. He was an animal lover and had many beloved pets. Minnie, a rescue dog, was known to be his sidekick and “best friend.” Among Mr. Gerald’s many accomplishments, his greatest by far was the ability to make everyone feel special. His devotion as a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend has left a legacy of love, compassion and faith that will live on throughout generations.
Survivors include his wife, Becky Sanders Weir Gerald; two daughters, Jennifer (Jeff) Deck of Terre Haute and Janet (Shane) Parker of Terre Haute; three grandchildren, Justen (Jessica) Deck, Chris (Kisha) Deck and Zoey Parker; three great-grandchildren, Brooklyn, Colton and Hudson Deck; a step-daughter, Holly (Kevin) Kellerman of Crawfordsville; three step-grandchildren, Will, Lauren and Alex Kellerman; and a sister-in-law, Alberta Gerald.
He was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Bonnie Wethington Gerald Simpson; two brothers, Bill Gerald and Danny Gerald; and a sister-in-law, Marilyn Gerald.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, April 22 at Woodland Heights Christian Church in Crawfordsville with Pastor Tony Thomas officiating. Family and friends may pay their respects an hour prior to service. Burial will follow at Ladoga Cemetery.
