North Montgomery defeated Crawfordsville 3-2 in their regular season match up back on Sept. 12. Thursday evening, the Athenians used victories in all three singles matches to turn the tables in their Sectional semi-final, defeating the Chargers 3-2.

The Chargers no. 1 doubles team of Mitch Merica and Tyler Swick wasted no time in their match against Mitchell Karp and Blake Froedge, winning in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.

Eddie Heinold tied the match at one defeating Chase Donaldson at no. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-3.

“Eddie’s win was big as he dominated that first set.” Athenian head coach Carrie Jones said. “He helped set the tone with in the first set.”

No. 1 singles player Vladik Cegarra put the Athenians up 2-1 with his 6-2, 6-1 victory over Devan Plant.

Timothy Newlin and Jaxon Plant tied the match at 2-a-piece beating Parker Watt and Josh Blackburn, 6-4, 6-3 in no. 2 doubles.

Both coaches knew the match would come down to no. 3 singles between Athenian Ryan Fry and Charger Matt Jackman. Fry withstood a first set tie break to defeat Jackman, in the most competitive match of the evening, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.

“We knew it would come down to three singles.” Charger coach Ric Walke said. “Give Ryan credit, he played well.”

“Ryan came out pumped, because he lost his regular season match.” Jones said. “He really wanted to get that (win).”

“All of our guys played well,” she continued. “We’ll be ready for tomorrow.”

“Our guys fought and played hard.” Walke said. “Our two doubles teams played well did what they were supposed to do, as they’ve been big for us all year.”

“Chase played well, and I thought Devan hit the ball better too.” he continued. “Our one doubles team will look to move out of Sectional play.”

Crawfordsville advances to tomorrow’s Sectional final where they will face Turkey Run. The match is scheduled at 4:45 p.m.

“There’s a little mystery about Turkey Run, as we don’t know much about them.” Jones said. “We lost in Sectional last year, and the guys really want it this year.”
