Crawfordsville’s bid to win the tennis sectional came up just a few points short Friday evening at Wabash College. As the Turkey Run Warriors defeated the Athenians 3-2 to advance to next week’s Regional.

“I’m so proud of the guys, and the way they performed this season,” said Athenian head coach Carrie Jones. “We entered with only one returning varsity player, and I’d say we exceeded everyone’s expectations.”

Crawfordsville again used their singles play to jump out to an early 2-1 lead. Vladik Cegarra led the way defeating George Muoz at one singles, 6-3, 6-1, and Ryan Fry defeated Nate Ferguson at three singles with a 6-3, 6-0 win.

Turkey Run’s one doubles team of Luke Gill and Seth Jones helped draw the match closer by beating Mitchell Karp and Blake Froedge 6-3, 6-2, before Brock Mitchell defeated Eddie Heinold at two singles 6-3, 6-3.

Crawfordsville two doubles team of Josh Blackburn and Parker Watt took the first set from Turkey Run 6-4. However, the tandem of Austin Hartman and Trevor Hardman took the last two sets 6-3, 6-3 to give the Warriors the title.

“We were hopeful that Josh and Parker could pull out the win for us at two doubles,” added Jones. “But, I couldn’t be more proud of their effort.”

The Athenians will return a solid nucleus next year, which has Coach Jones already looking to the future.

“We’ll work on our fundamentals and polishing our skills over the remainder of the year, and next summer,” said Jones. “The guys took direction well, and they were coachable, so those are great things to build on.”

Cegarra, who was the lone senior, will advance in the individual sectional with a match either Tuesday or Wednesday.
