Like their regular season matchup on Sept. 1, Crawfordsville used their singles play to advance in the opening round of sectional with a 3-2 win over county rival Southmont Wednesday evening.

The Athenians made quick work with their opening singles matches jumping out to a quick 2-0 lead. Vladik Cegarra defeated Luke Cope 6-0, 6-0 in their no. 1 singles match, and Ryan Fry beat Will Glancy 6-1, 6-0 at the third singles match

However, the Mounties quickly erased that deficit capturing both doubles matches. Reese Long and Jack Reimondo defeated Mitchell Karp and Blake Froedge 6-3, 6-1 while the no. 2 doubles team of Clayton Berrisford and Ben Paddock beat Parker Watt and Josh Blackburn 6-2, 6-4 to tie the match at two.

That left the two singles match between Southmont’s Patrick Scheidler and Crawfordsville’s Eddie Heinold as the deciding point. In that Sept. 1 matchup, Heinold cooled down a hot Scheidler with a straight set victory.

Heinold got stronger as the match went on defeating Scheidler in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-2.

“We were hoping that we were going to be able to hold to those three singles matches.” Athenian head coach Carrie Jones said. “Fortunately, Eddie found his rhythm late in the first set and carried that momentum into the second.”

“Pat is a competitor and played well.” Southmont head coach Nathan Poynter said. “He’s come a long way as a tennis player, and he will continue to improve.”

Monday marked the last match for Mountie seniors Clayton Berrisford and Benjamin Paddock. “They’re good kids with good potential, and you hate to lose good kids.” Poynter said. “However, we do have a good nucleus coming back, so we’re looking forward to next year.”

The Athenians will advance to play North Montgomery tomorrow at 4:45.

“I told the guys that they’ve been working all season towards this goal.” Jones said. “We’re excited, we’re motivated, and we’re ready to go.”
