LINDEN – Friday’s home game against Tri-West (8-8, 4-6 SAC) could have been a trap game for the host Chargers with next week’s big county and conference showdown with the Athenians looming. However, North Montgomery showed no signs of overlooking the Bruins, beating them soundly 17-2 in a five inning affair.

On a clear, crisp mid-Spring evening, reminiscent more of fullbacks than fastballs, you could almost hear Trent Johnson shatter the icicles off catcher Westin Evans' glove. Johnson's 16 strikeout, six inning one-hitter shattered Tri-West, and Crawfordsville notched a 7-2 Sagamore Athletic Conference victory.

FRANKFORT – Crawfordsville entered Wednesday’s Sectional quarterfinal looking to play the underdog role to their advantage.

Their game plan was simple, take good shots in the flow of the offense, slow the tempo down against a very athletic Bruin team, play good defense, and give themselves a chance to win. They executed that plan perfectly, but a late turnover ended the Athenians season, 51-46.

North Montgomery enters Friday’s Sagamore Conference matchup against Tri-West as one of the hottest teams in the area. They are currently on a six-game winning streak and with Lebanon’s loss Tuesday they will look to deny the Bruins a share of the conference crown.

The Chargers (14-6, 4-2 SAC) have asserted themselves with their defense during the stretch. They are outscoring their opponents by an average of 17.5 points per game, while also winning two conference games in the run.

  • Athenians have tough test at Tri-West
    Thursday, February 11, 2016 7:42 PM

Crawfordsville may be in the midst of the toughest stretch of their schedule heading into Sectional. With Tuesday’s five-point loss to Class A, No. 7, Lafayette Central Catholic, the Athenians are right back into Sagamore Conference action Friday when they travel to Lizton to battle second place Tri-West.

The Bruins are 12-5 overall and 4-1 in the Conference. They are tied with Danville, who battles first-place Lebanon on Tuesday. Tri-West, with a little help from the Warriors, could tie for the Conference championship.
