The Frankfort Hot Dogs scored on five of their seven first half possessions, and tacked on a defensive touchdown, as they raced to a 28-7 first quarter lead and never looked back, beating Crawfordsville on Homecoming 58-23.
Frankfort’s Dyllan Shelley took the opening kickoff from his own 12 yard line, and raced 71 yards down to the Athenian 17 to give the Hot Dogs great field position. Quarterback Jarrod Smith would scamper in on the next play for the 8-0 lead.
He and Shelley also played roles on the next two Frankfort scores from the defensive side of the ball. Smith’s interception set up a 10 play 63-yard drive that he capped off with a 1-yard run. Shelley would return his interception 48-yards for the score and a 22-0 Frankfort lead 7:06 in.
“They showed up to play, and we didn’t,” said Athenian head coach Mike Hammons. “I think it’s as easy as that. We’re struggling at the beginning of games to be ready to play.”
