The Crawfordsville Athenian tennis team saw defeat in their season opener against state-ranked Avon.

After a two-hour weather delay, the Athenians took the court, but soon found themselves falling behind their opponent. The match ended in favor of Avon as they defeated Crawfordsville 4-1.

“We didn't move our feet and we came out unfocused,” Coach Michael Demeter commented.  “We need to do a better job paying attention to the little details to play a complete game.”

NO. 1 singles player Dane Baldwin defeated Avon’s Ryan Lingle 6-4, 6-2.

“Dane's victory over Lingle was huge,” Demeter said. “He was one of the four opponents that was able to beat Dane last year, so to start the season off with that victory speaks volumes to the work he has put in and how bad he want to succeed this senior year.”

The Athenians will be back in action on Tuesday against Fountain Central at their home courts starting at 4:30 p.m.
