Crawfordsville (0-1) opens their home portion of the schedule Friday when West Vigo comes to town.

The Athenians will look to build off their successes of last week’s game with another solid performance against the Vikings.

“I have to commend the kids on their effort and the way they fought last Friday.” Head coach Larry Getts said. “Down 21-7, they really showed some heart in the second half and gave themselves an opportunity to win down the stretch.”

“I’m not sure they could’ve done that last year.” He continued. “Now, the question is can we sustain that again this Friday, or will it prove to be a one-and-done type thing?”

The Vikings lead the overall series 10-5 against Crawfordsville and have won three in row, including last year’s 46-26 win in West Terre Haute. Crawfordsville’s last win in the series was a 36-0 shutout in a first round sectional game in 2007.

The Athenian offense was paced by senior quarterback Trent Johnson against Greencastle. He was 6-of-10 for 182 yards and a touchdown and also led the Athenian rushing attack with 64 yards on 10 carries. Daulton Bridgewater was his leading receiver with 144 yards on five catches, and had four carries for 12 yards.

Cam Saunders had the other reception for the Athenians, a 38-yard gain on a third down play to keep the Athenian drive alive late in the game.

“Our conditioning was starting to wear them down towards the end of the game.” Getts said of last Friday. “Our kids played their rear ends off when several times they could’ve packed it in.”

West Vigo comes into the contest at 1-0, but had to score two fourth quarter touchdowns to pull out their win last Friday against Class A North Central (Farmersburg).

Crawfordsville will look to enter Conference play with a win, as they host the Vikings Friday at 7 p.m.
